This book is brilliant and brilliantly written. In a micro sense, it's a first-person look at addiction. You root for Demon the whole way through and understand every step of the way how and why things play out for him as they do. It's a stigma-breaking, stigma-examining book. In a macro sense, it's a look at the opioid crisis and how it has played out in certain communities across the country in the US.

I feel obligated to give this a higher rating because of the quality of the writing, but quite frankly I went from listening at 1X to 1.2X to 1.5X finally to 1.8X speed to get it over with.
This was an extremely character driven novel where bad thing after bad thing after bad thing happens to the main character, and at a certain point it made me feel the way an Oscar bait movie does. Yeah, it's really technically good and heartbreaking, but just because it's sad doesn't mean it needs to win all of the awards or that I would call it 'enjoyable'.
I guess what I am trying to say is it really just wasn't for me.

Worthy of its Pulitzer Prize!  Beautiful work and intense characters who you root for despite the odds and reality of life. A flagrant and justified condemnation of Big Pharma and how we act as those people “not like us” are disposable 😖
