I don't know why there are so many negative reviews for this book? I loved it. It's being compared to acotar but imo it's kind of giving cruel prince vibes? Very YA, and definitely a conflicted love triangle but I'm here for it, I'll read the whole series.
medium-paced
Overall this book felt incredibly flat. For a book that has so much tell rather than show, I had no idea what was going on most of the time. The world building was vague so I could not conceptualise what this world was supposed to look like how it operated, how all the various islands and castles and bridges came together. Sometimes there would be a change of scene that just popped out of nowhere and it was entirely unclear how it related to the previous scene or how the characters had ended up in a situation. My most damning criticism however comes to the romance, indeed what romance. There was no heat, no sizzle, no chemistry, and absolutely no reason why TWO leading men could possibly fall for our bland, personality’less main character.

UPDATE UPON FINISHING:
Well it was even stupider than I thought. Oro by himself gets 3 stars, the rest of it gets a low low low 2 stars. I saw most of the twists coming and the ones I didnt see coming may as well have been hidden behind a brick wall they were so poorly set up. This would have been 10% better if everything wasn’t named so stupid. The premise was interesting, the execution dogshit. Alas these are hours of my life I will never get back and if I pick up the next one it will be out of self hatred or morbid curiosity. I don’t see how Grim is in any way redeemable after what he did. Fuck that guy.
EDIT: I ended up picking this up again, I’m halfway through. Will update with my full thoughts once I’m done.
I gave it 100 pages and I had to tap out. None of the worldbuilding makes any sense, and the way the exposition is delivered makes it feel like she was writing this stream of consciousness style, like she was just making it up as she went. It was so haphazard in its delivery that I had to keep flipping back and forth to check because she would establish rules but then say something that seemingly completely contradicted that rule. It was also boring, I didn’t care about any of the characters or the story itself. I didn’t believe the premise and I’m constantly asking “why is this like this?” about every rule she establishes because it all feels ridiculously contrived, and I have no faith that any of it will get explained. The writing wasn’t the worst but it also wasn’t good.
I’m happy to just let this one pass me by. Happy for everyone who liked it, couldn’t be me.

It was better than the last book I read. But not fleshed out enough? I expected some fantasy hunger games type book, but that wasn’t it. The centennial really made no sense… and the first half’s pacing was weird though I liked the second half of the book. Idunno. I’m tired of reading lacklustre books :( I’m glad grim and her random attraction made sense at the end otherwise there was no reason for the intensity of them throughout. However, Oro and her relationship grew organically and we witnessed it and he seems to be a nicer partner than Grim.
I took a break from Sarah Maas books because I started finding her stuff to be the same characters w different names every time, which got old to me. Especially the female / male relationships and their dialogue… But now I’m finding her to be the best writer I’ve found in this sea of romantasy in terms of world building and growth of characters. Does it not get any better? What am I missing?!
