What an interesting beginning to a series. Flawed characters who admit and overcome their flaws are so much more interesting than those who are rendered as perfect heroes. I enjoyed the tension in this but even more so the character development.

Where it falls short is in making assumptions that the reader knows the back story through comments that make it feel like we have missed a prior book or like this one is the second or third in a series.

I snatched up this book because I got an early copy of the second book in this series. I cannot say that I am disappointed. This new-to-me author is one I can't wait to read more of.

So, this series is a spin-off from the author's previous series, which I realized very quickly there was a lot of backstory I didn't have. However, that was okay. Even though I would have preferred to have been more informed on the characters, the fact that I wasn't didn't ruin the book for me. I was able to breeze through this book with no issues. I will be going back and reading the previous series though. I can say that with absolute guarantee.

This book had me guessing and second guessing myself all the way through. I thought I knew. Then I changed my mind. I was back and forth with the who from the very start. And let me say, I didn't fully see THAT coming at the very end. However, I think the who is exactly who it should have been, considering. (Am I confusing you?)

This book is the kind of mystery that I typically crave. It's suspenseful. It has enough twists and turns to keep my mind constantly on the book. It has great, developed characters with some very real and interesting pasts that align with their present. The plot is spot on. I can't really sing enough praises for this book.

One of my pet peeves is when reticence is employed as a narrative device to prolong the revealing of information -- the emergence of certain characters and their information felt too convenient/staged. However, the story arc is interesting and held my attention. A quick read, not wholly satisfying, but still well-executed.

I really enjoy this author’s legal mysteries and this one did not disappoint.  Bocephus  is struggling after the death of his wife when he is called back to defend the DA in Pulaski for the murder of Ex husband.  There are lots of other suspects but she is not doing a lot to clear her name.  While building a defense Bocephus uncovers lots of small town secrets.  The mystery was good with lots of twists turns and surprises.  I enjoy the setting and reading about many familiar places in Tennessee and Alabama.  This is the first book in this series but takes place after the McMurtrie Drake series.  Those should be read first as many of the characters and mysteries are in this book.  Enjoy this twisty legal southern mystery

The paths of District Attorney Helen Lewis and lawyer Bo Haynes cross when Helen is arrested for the murder of her ex-husband Butch. Bo, just coming out of suspension from the murder of his wife (a murder he had no hand in), is hesitant to take the case. He lost his wife and lost the custody of his kids and is at the lowest of his life. He decides to represent Helen to get going in the right direction. As the trial gets closer, dark secrets start to come to light; an abortion, a prostitution ring, and a rape. What do all of these have in common? Did Helen actually murder Butch? Find out in Legacy of Lies.
This book is full of suspense and twists and turns. I did not want to put it down. It had me at the edge of my seat for the majority of it.

An entertaining legal thriller with interesting, well developed characters. Some good twists and great ending. Four stars because there were an awful lot of characters, and it was difficult to keep track of who was who and who did what in the past. This is the first in a series. Looking forward to book 2.
