It's been a really crazy past few weeks around here. It's my craziest season at work, we have been dealing with the nasty flooding - thankfully, we personally and our families are fine and dry but many in our town are not - and we just haven't been reading much. When we have, I've been bouncing around between a few books, but I finally wrapped up most of those last night/this morning. Nick and I both just finished Crossroads of Twilight - #10 in the Wheel of Time megaseries by Robert Jordan - and that's definitely been taking up a lot of reading time. I'll let him tell you about that one, though!
I grabbed this book off the shelf a few weeks ago because it seemed pretty light and like a good break from the things I've been reading lately/the craziness of life. The sheep are the main characters and their shepard has been killed - and the sheep are determined to find out who did it. Talking sheep, nice, light cozy mystery, right? Nope.
At first it was amusing. The sheep talk, the sheep think in their sheepy ways - humorous. But then it got SLOW. SO SLOW. I'm not totally sure what happened in the middle two thirds of the story, except for the sheep think strangely and they didn't understand what was going on. Then the ending seemed to come out of nowhere. Not at all how I expected the story to wrap up.
The ending raised my overall judgement of this book a bit - for awhile there, I didn't think there would be much of an explanation or ending at all - but overall, would NOT recommend. I about gave up on this book many times, but after I put a certain amount of time into it, it seems silly to quit. I still regret that decision.
I'll go 2 of 10 for enjoyment and 3 of 5 for readability. Not what I expected and didn't get better, but at least the ending sort of wrapped things up? Also - not for children. Just going to throw that out there too.

Just not my bag of tea. I have a hard time when things or animals are anthropomorphized and this is a case in point. Never liked [b:Watership Down|76620|Watership Down|Richard Adams|http://photo.goodreads.com/books/1298434234s/76620.jpg|1357456] (rabbits really?) and here is case of animals who are solving the murder of their farmer. I really only read about 50 pages and, while moderately interesting and pretty clever, just couldn't shake the fact that I was reading about sheep.
And as someone who helped raise some sheep on his "farm" as a kid, I couldn't imagine them being anywhere near this intelligent. Trust me - they just aren't that bright.
So call me not too bright for not being able to suspend disbelief and just enjoy the mystery, but I couldn't.
I wonder how to deal with this on Goodreads. I hate to count it as "reading a book", but I tried it, gave it a good shot and gave up. The only way I can rate it is to put it on my Read shelf. Oh well...

A most unlikely book for me to read. I would never have picked it up except my local bookstore owner recommended it. I am delighted that she did, I thoroughly enjoyed reading the book.
Interesting book. It's translated from German and told from the point of view of sheep. It opens with the sheep finding the dead body of their shepherd. They decide to solve the mystery.
I'm taking a break from it. I've read just over 50 pages and I'm not yet convinced that I care about finishing it. I'll come back to it soon and see how I feel.

A book that dares to wonder if sheep are smarter than Irish people.
