Many proclaim this novel to be powerful masterpiece about forbidden love, but it was not. Rather it was the lowest possible form of fiction about a man who thinks he is in love, but is not. Which to be fair, forbidden love stories tend to make my skin crawl. It frustrates me to no end that it is considered great literature and great romance for people to choice a lover over a spouse....

Anyway, Ethan Frome----His life is merely so depressing that he would jump anything that came along. There is nothing particularly engaging about this type of writing. I found Edith's writing style to be a lot like nathaniel hawthorne's style: there are a lot of descriptions of the landscape, and the environment but there is little discussion to what the characters are thinking/feeling. This makes it difficult for the reader, a reader like me anyway, to connect with the story and really care about the out come.

I did not find any value or enjoyment out of this novel/plot line what-so-ever.n. So if you have time on your hands and you are looking for a good read, I suggest the local phone book would be a viable alternative to the novel Ethan Frome.

I'll include a more thorough review after book club. Right now, I'm just thinking how pointless all this torture is. Ethan Frome makes an unwise marriage decision. He falls for his wife's cousin. Instead of leaving his wife--because he would feel guilty about her being destitute--he decides to kill himself and his new young paramour. Um. How does that leave his wife any better off? I guess it was the guilt he was more concerned about, not the actual leaving her probably penniless and homeless. All the characters are detestable. Maddie, the young girl, is alright, until she decides that she'd rather die than leave Ethan. Ugh. Read a book, sweetie, that's never a good idea.
dark sad

Edith Wharton… she just gets it.

If Bruce Springsteen wrote a novel, it might go a little something like this...
