This was a wonderful picture book, with fabulous messages about working hard, persistence, how failure is its own kind of success, and how you learn from failure. I especially appreciated the fact that the protagonist is a young girl, who builds, and fixes, and works hard, and eventually creates exactly what she wanted to.

This book pretty much sums up my experience every time I set out to accomplish something. A little girl sees something in her mind that she wants to make. She gathers supplies and makes “the thing”, but it isn’t right. It isn’t what she envisioned. So she tries again. And again. And again. You get the idea. Eventually, she has a “lightbulb” moment, and she decides to go about the making of “the thing” in a different way, paving the way for her to make the “most magnificent thing”.

I thought this book was adorable and its message of perseverance wonderful. The writing was simple, yet entertaining, and the illustrations were beautiful.

I recommend this to anyone with little kids, and I will go out on a limb here, and guess that the cuteness of this book will have little ones asking to read this over and over.

This is a story about a little girl who is a maker, but the thing in her head isn't coming out right. I like that the illustrations told other parts of the story too, and that it stresses that sometime we have to walk away from a problem to better reflect. I also liked that her "failures" were just what the other members of her community needed.

For: readers who want a book about invention and overcoming feelings of failure.

Possible red flags: tantrums, anger, and feelings of failure.

A little girl has a terrific idea to build something magnificent. But along the way, things do not go quite right.

Oh my goodness did I see myself in this little girl! I remember having brilliant ideas on what to build with my Legos but then getting increasingly frustrated that what was in my head wouldn’t come out in the actual blocks!

I wish I had this book as a child. It would have been nice to read a story that teaches that a walk away from the problem can provide such amazing perspective when one returns to it. Why is that lesson so hard to learn?!?

A beautiful story with an important moral.

Another strong female engineer book aimed at children. The message, to persevere, deal with frustration and seek out your dreams with unbounded optimism and patients makes this book another solid recommendation for children and adults alike. I really enjoyed the book, as I thought I would. I was very impressed by the artwork, something that caught me off guard. I give four stars because the story lacked a sufficient. lose, the story was loose, and I wasn't really impressed with the constant dog peeing. I understand this may be funny, but I didn't feel it added much to the story, merely, potty humour in an otherwise highly developed socially conscious book.

This was a cute children's story about perseverance. I loved how the author didn't downplay the frustration the girl felt when she kept failing. She took her dog for a walk and cleared her head, and discovered the solution to her problem. Very cute story, and the illustrations were adorable.

Thanks again to NetGalley and the publisher for my copy.

RATING: 4 STARS

A little girl is in search of making the most magnificent thing with her assistant, her dog. The little girl soon finds herself frustrated with not being able to make the perfect thing. She gets so angry she wants to quit. Then she takes a step back and thinks for a bit and soon comes up with the most magnificent thing.

I am loving Spires' illustrations and the stories she tell are realistic and relevant to the children reading them. I like how Spires deals with frustration, perseverance and perfection.
