SPOILERS. wow. wow. wow. i have a good amount to say about this book. THERE ARE SPOILERS
*this was the first book i read this year and i loved it*

~i loved the narrators (skeeter, minny, aibleen) and how they all had something special about them for when it was their turn to narrate. Skeeter's inner banter was so funny, and i teared up some during aibleen's chapters.
~the conflict and the complicated-ness of all the relationships in Jacksonville was really well thought out
~it was emotionally provoking. i laughed, i teared up, i was shocked and so upset at the miscarriage part (even though i had watched the movie and knew about it), it was so well written!
~lovable characters! not all of them, obviously (ahem, hilly), but yeah!
~I HATE HILLY AHHHHH. all of the women and mens lives revolve around her and how she can say this and she can say that and she has everyone in the palm of her hand and personally i think she's a controlling crazy jerk who i absolutely despise
~the fact that i finished a 500 page book in like 4 days shocks me
~the amount of times i smiled or opened my mouth in shock is crazyyy
~THE ENDING. ill leave it at that. THE ENDINGGGG...

ok other than all that, i feel like a small part of the end dragged on, but then it picked up for a great finale, so that's that.
also, i'm so conflicted about her mom. she kind of slayed a few times but also was annoying to skeeter so yeah.

overall, such a journey and i so recommend!!

An interesting read about a heavily challenging subject. Well written for the most part. However, I felt like I couldn't give it a higher rating as for the most part it read like white saviourism.

My opinion might be biased. Of the few movies me and my mom have watched together in my life, I could probably count them on one hand, this was one we both loved when it was available On Demand on Dish or DirectTv or whichever one of those cable providers had that service. The next year I bought the book at the Scholastic book fair, one with a cover from the movie poster, and I read that book six times. The spine is worn out and the edges of the cover are all bent up because I used to try to carefully put it in my backpack, but I haven't carried a backpack since sixth grade, so all my backpacks were actually big bags / purses anyone could see from a mile away, so of course my homework and any books I carried would slide and get smooshed and wrinkled and folded up if I dropped something in there and it landed wrong.

I don't know what impact this book left on me. I assume an important one. I still love the book despite the controversy, maybe also in spite of it. My grandmother was born in Jackson. She and Mae Mobley would've been a week apart, if they were both alive and real, respectively. Her side of the story, what would've been my grandmother's I mean, isn't shown, but maybe someone story she would've known was. Maybe her auntie or cousin or someone who she went to church with, had her mother not moved out of the South before she was three months old. I don't know. The story's very real. Whether or not it connects to you personally, who doesn't have a soft spot for those?

I'm glad Skeeter didn't end up with the guy.

Like many before, I didn't love that the author is a white woman. I think it's a great book premise, a good way to make white people look at themselves, but you can't know unless you've lived certain things. idk, I'm white too, and I thought the things that happened in the novel seemed plausible, but how would I know.
