A solid follow-up to the first in the series. I think I even enjoyed this one more. I'd listened to a history podcast that talked about competing archaeologists behaving in the manner described in the books (hurling items at one another on dig sites, setting up fake dig sites, sabotaging dig sites etc.) so it added an unexpected layer of realism to the story! Looking forward to reading number three.

4 1/2 stars

I enjoyed this even more than the first. It is a great setup for a bigger story arc. And it seemed to focus more on Ms. Rook and her feminist values. Fun read! I'm already looking forward to the next one!

The stakes have gone up since the first book and I love it!

Abigail Rook left her home and her family in search of adventure and found it. Now she investigates paranormal crime with a sherlock-holmesesque man named Jackaby. On this adventure, Jackaby and Miss Rook are sent to investigate the site of a dinosaur dig to hide their real investigation, the strange circumstances under which Mrs. Brisbee has died. They are distracted from their investigation when strange claw mark and small animals begin to go missing. Now it looks as though a thought to be extinct creature may have returned to ravage the land. Will they be able to solve the case in time?

I really like the Jackaby books. I love the sense of feeling like Watson. Sometimes when you are reading a mystery you can guess the ending by the clues that are laid out in the book, but since the answers to most of these mysteries are also themselves mysterious it is hard to guess at exactly what the author wants to reveal until the moment he chooses to reveal it, although the clues are always still there. This series is delightful and I cannot wait to read the next one.

So much fun. Fucking love Jackaby. It's about time I got farther into this series. Don't care for the will she/won't she romance but hopefully that will end with this book.

3.5

I don't feel like I can correctly review a book when my brain is tired when I'm reading it.
But the book helped me escape for a bit.
It had an interesting twist to it that leaves you hoping the next book comes out soon.
Am looking forward to the next book.

The sequel to 'Jackaby' did not disappoint. The best word to describe this series, is, I think, "delightful". Charming and unique, fast paced and interesting, my total read time for this book was a little under 5 hours. A bit more romance was present in this novel, but it's very old-fashioned, "proper" romance and one quick kiss at the end. The romance (if you can even call it that) is hardly the driving plot of the book at all.
What does drive the plot, however, is quite literally, a mystery of epic proportions. So many clever twists and turns had me excited to uncover the next clue, and the next. The underlying mystery will continue in the next book!

Just as fun as the first installment! I thought this was a re-read for me originally but the further I got into it, clearly I’d never finished it before.

This installment had: dinosaurs, dragons, and Darwin. (Oh my!)

A little bit of love story growth (still in the background).

These first two have been quick, light, and fun reads!
