Dinosaur supernatural romp.
"So often, people think that when we arrive at a crossroads, we can choose only one path, but - as I have often and articulately postulated - people are stupid. We're not walking the path. We are the path. We are all of the roads and all of the intersections. Of course you can choose both."
.
Jackaby shook his head. "Miss Rook," he said, "the greatest figures in history are never the ones who avoid failure, but those who march chin-up through countless failures, one after the next, until they come upon the occasional victory." He put a hand on my shoulder. "Failure is not the opposite of success - it's a part of it. And as failures go," he added with a lopsided grin, "this one was really spectacular, wasn't it?"
.
"That's nonsense," said Jackaby. "Fortune favours the prepared. Unless you're talking about the Fates, in which case fortune generally favours Zeus. Were you talking about the Fates?"
In my opinion, this series has hit its stride with this second book. The central case brings Abigail's paleontology smarts together with Jackaby's sight and knowledge, and culminates in a high-action climax. Chameleomorphs are also such a fantastic concept to begin with.
Lovely message about Abigail getting to "choose both" (a career and a man - hello Charlie, I'm glad you're still featuring in the story). On the other hand, I love Nellie Fuller and amsorely disappointed she gets killed off .
I couldn't tell at first where Jenny's arc was headed, but now I'm really excited that her case will be tackled next, and super proud of her for crossing that mental bridge.

"The only paths you can't travel are the ones you block yourself - so don't let the fear of failure stop you from trying in the first place."
Not as good as the first book, which isn't saying much.
The story drags and the mystery is very, very obvious. So obvious you will get frustrated with the characters for not picking up on it.
I continue to have issues with the details in these books. This time it's the word "bones". There's a dinosaur dig and everyone calls the fossils bones. All three paleontologist call the fossils bones - saying they're digging up bones, protecting bones, bones have gone missing, etc. This obvious inaccuracy drove me mad. Fossils are not bones.
But if you throw all things accurate out the window ... you still have a slow story that has pacing issues and very few moments of excitement. All this has lead to my final decision: I won't be reading the third or fourth book. On to better things!

These books are a bit cheesy but still cute and fun. This book lays the groundwork for a larger story in the series and I'm looking forward to the next book.

This book was on par with the first one. Abigail and Charlie seem like they are going to be a slow burn which is okay but I would like to speed that up just a little bit. The chameleomorph story line was interesting for the most part but could have been faster to get into. I’m interested to see where the vampire plot goes in the next one.
