Review:This one was relatively boring for me. There were some aspects that i found interesting but they were just glazed over. I have some high hopes for the next book however, with how it was set up.

4.5*
Another fun installment! As a big Elementary fan, I love the male/female detective/protege relationship without any romantic involvement between Jackaby and Abagail. They are finding their stride as partners and I really like their development.
The story and mystery was even better than first book (I just read Jurassic Park so I’ve got dinos on the brain) and Hudson was a fun side character.
My biggest complaint, and the reason I couldn’t give this 5 stars, was that the book was just too short. It felt more like a novella and even though I was satisfied with how the mystery was solved and wrapped up, I was just wanting a story with a bit more meat. But I’m dying to read the next one so I think this book did it’s job!

Felt fluffier than the first book, and I'm leaving it with the impression that not much happened until the end. I like the characters and the feel of it and the promise of what the next book in the series is offering, though. Probably a 3 star book but 4 stars for enjoyment level.
While the first book was just ok for me, I found myself more much invested in the second tale and happy to be with these characters again
really a 3.5. if you are looking for quirky likeable characters with quick wit & intelligence combined with supernatural boogeymen then this is a series you will enjoy. I can't wait for the next installment.

How phenomenal! From the very first pages I was absolutely hooked! I'm really surprised I hadn't finished this sooner, but I just wasn't in the mood to read anything for the past two weeks and didn't feel the need to force myself. But once I started reading this again I couldn't stop. It's incredibly witty, interesting, knowledgeable, and exciting. I'm really glad that I liked this book for different reasons than the reasons why I liked the first book. I think that made this experience that much more enjoyable for me.
When I read Jackaby a month or so ago, I read it as an audiobook (which I highly recommend!) but this time I read Beastly Bones as a physical book. It was so nice to revisit both Abigail Rook and R.F. Jackaby, both whom I had grown to truly love during the first book. They were just as good of a team this time around as they were last. Most of the characters from the first book did make an appearance in this one, along with a slew of new (and just as interesting) characters.
Most likely my favorite part about this series is the writing. Every single character is unique and has a distinct and easily identified voice. They all sound like real people and I actually have fancasts for these characters which almost never happens for me. I can very easily picture these characters and what they look like, what their mannerisms are and what they sound like. Jackaby is probably my favorite character. He's funny without trying to be, very matter-of-fact and just so lovably quirky and slightly arrogant. He can be so infuriating at times, but then he's engaging and insightful and you don't really care that he's being difficult. I really liked that he wasn't always right in this book and that there were moments where he wasn't really sure what was going on. It left more room for Abigail to make bigger discoveries and really grow into her role as an assistant detective. When it came to Abigail, I felt like she had done even more development from the first book into this one. She was smarter, more seasoned as a detective, and we got to really explore her love of fossils and dinosaurs. We also got to see her interact with more women in this book, which was nice as well. I also really hope that in Ghostly Echoes (which I am currently reading now) her friendship with Jenny will be even more fleshed out.
I don't want to get too spoiler-y, but the romance in this book was very good. If you like slow (SLOW) burn romance and aren't looking for a book with an obvious romantic plotline, then this is the book for you. Even the first book wasn't very focused on romance at all. There is a slight romance between Abigail and Charlie (a police officer from the first book), but it's a very, very minor plotline. It's really refreshing to read a book with a female protagonist that is extremely light on the romance. Sometimes it just gets boring seeing almost every single female-led book out there have a big romance that is important to her development as a character. Abigail's development comes from her experiences as a detective and the things she learns about the world rather than her falling in love with anyone. (Can I also mention that I LOVE that she's not interested in Jackaby? Like, I would ship it... But it's nice that it's not a thing.)
The one thing I am disappointed in is that there isn't too much change in the diversity of the book. There was some small additions, but it wasn't as much as I was expecting. I am hoping that Ghostly Echoes will prove to be a little more diverse. There was a little more diversity in race, but not in sexuality. This is why it's not a five-star read for me.
Overall, I really did enjoy this book. It's short and I think that if I had put my mind to it, I could have easily finished it in a day. I'm really excited to get into Ghostly Echoes! If you like books like Stalking Jack the Ripper and Hunting Prince Dracula by Kerri Maniscalco, then you will definitely like these books. (I still highly recommend the audiobooks! Makes for a really interesting reading experience.)

I read the first book in the series back when it was first released. I loved it but never got around to finishing the series. That is, until I had finally caught up on review copies for February and found myself looking for something new to read. There are so many books I could have chosen during this time – other series I have been meaning to finish, books that have been languishing on my shelves for over a decade. Yet, the Jackaby series is exactly what I needed at that point in time.
The series never takes itself too seriously. It is as raucous and bizarre as the synopsis indicates. At the same time, it is very much a story with heart. Jackaby is more than the odd detective with rare skills. He has a hidden soft side that you don’t really understand until the end of the second novel. Abigail has spunk, which is something you realize almost immediately but which never fails to impress throughout the series. Even better, every once in a while there would be a sentence so in keeping with some of the brouhaha in today’s society that I had to stop and marvel at its perfection. I found myself looking forward to these gems even as they continued to surprise me when I finally ran across one.
I went into reading these novels expecting silly fun with great characters and a good mystery. What I got out of them was so much more than that. They are reminders to love and accept one another in spite of or maybe even because of our differences. They are reminders to keep your mind and your heart open and to never fail to help someone in need. They are affirmations that we are more than the boundaries set by others and that we all deserve the chance to grow and shine. While still quirky and highly entertaining, they are also inspiring. Honestly, you cannot get much better than that.
