This is such a fast paced mystery and I love it! Jackaby and Abigail have such a wonderful working relationship. They work so well together and are pretty hilarious at times. I loved that Abigail got her chance to shine with her knowledge of paleontology.
There were quite a few new characters introduced and I really loved Nellie Fuller. She wasn't afraid to upset people to do her work or take risks. I think she had a bit of a harsh view on romance, but she was a lovely character. Owen Horner was adorable and geeky which was awesome. We also get to see Charlie again and I literally love him so much.
The supernatural was all over this book and the creatures in it were truly amazing. I'm super stoked to read book 3 and find out what happened to Jenny.

This series is fine, although I think I liked the first one more than this one. Book 2 had less paranormal stuff and more paleontology digs, which wasn't really my jam. I prefer the ghosts and werewolves. It's cute, but not enough to hold my interest for two more books so I think I'm going to end my reading of the series here.
4.5/5 Stars!
I love these books so much! Jackaby, Abigail, and Charlie have such interesting adventures! I loved this one from the shapeshifting kittens to the dinosaur bones!

I just love these books! So much fun and mystery with sprinkles of feminism weaved into the story. Ritter writes a variety of strong female characters that are absolutely wonderful. Not to mention the eccentricity of Jackaby that never ceases to make me laugh.
Jackaby was one of my stand out reads last year and when I found out there would be a series of books I was so excited.
Jackaby sets the stage for the series… set in the late 1800’s Abigail and Jackaby are quite the odd pair. Jackaby of course is a private investigator of the paranormal. Abigail just recently joining Jackaby as his assistant, comes from a quite different background but is completely intrigued with the strange things that no one seems to really notice, or want to notice, save Jackaby. She’s found the adventure she wanted in her new life and is diving in head first.
Beastly Bones starts with some crazy shape shifting kittens and New Fiddleham police commissioner Marlowe at the door asking for help to solve a murder of “unnatural causes.” The mysterious puncture wound takes them to Gad’s Valley where the newly exiled Charlie Cane is living and dinosaur bones are found and a very mysterious beast is attacking both animals and people. Charlie needs Jackaby and Abigail to help find out what is going on.
That sounds like there is quite a bit going on in this story, and there is, but Ritter weaves it all together quite nicely. Ritter has created an incredibly unique character in Jackaby who is all at once wildly intelligent, endearing and slightly awkward and he steals every scene he’s in in these books. His straight forward way of laying out the facts and observing everything around him make him incredibly interesting. It’s almost easy to understand the balance that Abigail provides Jackaby to make their working relationship work, as well as this story.
I also loved some of the new characters we were introduced to, from the archeologists to Hank Hudson to the news reporter, they all added new elements to the story and allowed for some of the more light-hearted moments. I do have to say that I’m especially excited to hopefully learn more about Jenny though. While she was kind of in the background in parts of this installment, she had some major things going on and I can’t wait to see where that takes the story!
Another thing I’m excited for… Romance!! We were given hints of a romance in book 1 and I’m so happy to say that Beastly Bones really has me excited to see if an when Charlie and Abigail can work things out. It’s not going to be easy but I totally ship them.
If you’re looking for a fun read, filled with quirky characters and lots of the paranormal, you definitely need to be reading these books. Ritter tells an amazingly unique story full of action and mystery.
Thank you to Algonquin Books for the advanced copy in exchange for my honest thoughts!

I absolutely adored the first book, Jackaby. However, Beastly Bones just didn't conjure the same magic and love as I found with abundance in Jackaby. This book was less about Rook and Jackaby and more about other characters whom I did not find very interesting or compelling in any way. It also didn't take place in the city of their residence and thus Jenny wasn't in the book much. A lot of the fun and uniqueness just wasn't here for me this time around. That being said, I love William Ritter's work (so of course I really liked this book) and am so unbelievably excited for his next book in the series!
“So often,” Jackaby said, “people think that when we arrive at a crossroads, we can choose only one path, but—as I have often and articulately postulated—people are stupid. We’re not walking the path. We are the path. We are all of the roads and all of the intersections. Of course you can choose both.”
This serious is so good. Jackaby and Abagail perfectly contrast one another in every scene. This second book really showed more of their pasts, which I enjoyed tremendously.
While I felt the plot of this one was a bit more predictable, the story moved along at a nice pace and kept me going.
My favorite thing about this series has been how each book can stand alone. I can finish one and come back to the series later and not miss a beat! Wonderfully written and refreshingly funny, these stories of supernatural mayhem are worthy.

9/15/2016 - Started this morning. Will read until 9/20, then put on pause for Death's End. Solid continuation so far, but I am still early on in the book![return]9/20/16 - Enjoyable! We just found out who faked the footprints, but there is definitely something else going on too.... and I hope we learn more about what was happening to Jenny! I almost finished it, only have like an hour left or something... but must be put on pause for Death's End!!![return]10/5/2016 - Ah, well ok, the stuff with Jenny at the start was set up for book 3! Which is ok by me because I feel like there is a good story there just waiting for us and I would have hated for it to be cut short. Wrapped up the book yesterday. Good book, but hard to hold a candle against Death's End. I liked how the mystery was wrapped up, though I'm sad at the lose of Ms. Nelly Fuller, the newspaper woman.
