The pacing was quite stunted. Started with a bang, but got meandering, with the characters going to the capital then the north then the capital then the north then the capital again. Not to mention

a big final battle, literally in the last 20 pages!!! with no warning.

I also think this book would have been much rich if it to did some contemplation around "complicity". Especially around a bigoted regime that targets religious minorities.
