Okay okay, I know what you're thinking. This is a very strange book to consider a 5 star read, but it's all about expectations and execution. Because this is a such a strange experience, I'm gonna deviate from my usual format a little bit.
Let's start by getting a very important piece of information out of the way. I play minecraft pretty avidly, and though I think you can enjoy the book without knowing anything about the game, a lot of my enjoyment came from my experience playing it.
Now, this book is true to the minecraft experience. Our protagonist is from our world, and ends up trapped in minecraft with no knowledge of the game or how it works. Now, for those who don't know, minecraft is designed to be played without a tutorial. You're just thrown into a world, and have to figure it out for yourself. The trial and error nature of the game is very well reflected in the book.
One of my favourite ways this book references the actual game is when the game updates from the old to new combat system. It was cool to see the protagonist realize that old crafting recipes that didn't work suddenly did, and that "spam clicking" no longer worked. That was my favourite chapter. It added a lot of intrigue for me. If the game updated and it changed things for the protagonist, what does that say about the world?
The best part of this book was by far the humour. I kid you not, this is funniest book I've ever read.
If you play minecraft, read this book. If you don't, consider reading it anyway.

Read this out loud to my Minecraft-crazed 6.5 year old and he loved (LOVED) it.
The book started off promising, with the drowning and coming to terms that he's in a new world. However, the main character should've just drowned so that this story would've been over as soon as it started. The main character is extremely cringy and unrelatable and gives off heavy "how do you do, fellow kids?" vibes. It doesn't help that he gains these cheesy as hell life lessons and says them as if they're amazing advice to follow. The only characters I liked were the animal "friends" because they're just chilling on the island, being free.
Yep, I read this. Not the best book I've read, but I really wasn't expecting much from a game novelization, much less a game like Minecraft. Now, I do love the game and building epic stuff in it, but do I love it enough to read a bunch of books about it?
Not really.
Still, this was a fun, quick read, and I think younger kids who play Minecraft will perhaps enjoy this a little more than I did.

Nope.. Not for me. Too weird of a description of actually playing minecraft.
Wow, not what I was expecting at all! It was a bit basic in it's Minecraft world coverage but heavy in real life lessons. I appreciated the lessons but some of the writing felt as though it was aimed for teens to adults. Still, worth the lessons.
A surprisingly fun book that will probably bring some familiar feelings to those who have played minecraft. This novel manages to bring to life all of the feelings and accomplishments that come with playing the game for the first time. What happens when you discover a new craft or a new dungeon.
It is funny and you feel empathetic towards the main character, wondering how youd react in the same situation. It feels as real as can be for minecraft.
With that being said, it is pretty silly and the plot isnt quite there. It almost feels like a coming of age story with no ending.
Overall, if you like the game (which I presume you do of you are reading this) then Id say give it a read. It is fun and reinvokes the feelings of first playing Minecraft.
