Hey, a short little novella. Why not? I though. It was okay, nothing special. I didn't care for the plot and was confused throughout the whole story. If you asked me to give a summary of this, no words would come out of my mouth. Seriously, I don't remember a single thing that happened except for the interactions between Tarver and Lilac in the present. It was nice to read about the two again, and I would've preferred to get more insight into their lives after [b:These Broken Stars|13138635|These Broken Stars (Starbound, #1)|Amie Kaufman|https://d.gr-assets.com/books/1383578978s/13138635.jpg|18315607].
The writing is fluid, and made me crave some of that poetic inner monologue that we saw in the first installment.
The actual novella is only 50 pages, and the other 60 are excerpts of [b:These Broken Stars|13138635|These Broken Stars (Starbound, #1)|Amie Kaufman|https://d.gr-assets.com/books/1383578978s/13138635.jpg|18315607] and [b:This Shattered World|13138734|This Shattered World (Starbound, #2)|Amie Kaufman|https://d.gr-assets.com/books/1399982893s/13138734.jpg|18315710].
Since I've already read the first book, I skipped that one and went straight into the sneak peak of the sequel, which was enjoyable. I already like the new characters more than Tarver and Lilac, and think they had a lot more chemistry. The tension between them was solid, and there's a chance I'll read the full novel. Jubilee Chase sounds kick-ass.

I read the first book in this series quite some time ago, got myself the other two books right after finishing it and then discovered loads of other books and didn't return to this trilogy. However, this morning I finished my book a lot earlier than expected and while scrolling through my kindle I stumbled upon this novella and decided to give it a go.
It's a short story. A really short story. Technically only one third of the page count listed is spent on the short story. The rest consists of previews of the first book, which is now totally spoiled anyway if you hadn't read it yet, and the second book. However, this novella is offered for free on retailers so I'm quite glad I could enjoy it this way.
I liked how this story kept the story structure of the first book. Our main characters were talking about this returning nightmare and in between snippets of their conversations we read what has truly happened half a year before the first book is set. As someone who can sometimes have reader anxiety, especially if I care about the characters, this storytelling is great. It makes some nice promises.
This short novella is entirely about our hero ending a hostage situation all on his own. Of course, there is some violence and there are quite some brutal moments. I quite liked though how intelligence solved the situation. The violence was only used when there was no other way to do things. But getting as many people out safely was the true priority.
I can't wait to start the second book in the series. I hope I will get to it soon!

Meh. This wasn't really necessary in my opinion. I kind of liked how These Broken Stars did not focus on why Tarver is considered a war hero. It was thrilling enough for a novella, but in my opinion it did not really add anything I was missing.

Tarver has started to have nightmares. Nightmares about something that happened six months prior to the horror that was the Icarus crash. Six months prior where Tarver has to rescue a group of civilians from a group of brutal mercenaries. But is what happened then connected to what happened to both him and Lilac...
I finished this several days ago and, I did like this. It was a fast read (though I did have to spread it over several days - real life sucks sometimes!) and it was a nice titbit for readers. We get more Tarver and Lilac and we see them after the events of These Broken Stars. But it also gives us a insight to Tarver's history and why he was on the Icarus.
And it does a good thing by making the plot thicken over the mysterious LaRoux Industries.
But, I did have some issues. I always do so why did I expect not to have problems is anyone's guess.
While it was nice to read this, I was expecting more. I'm not what more I wanted but I was expecting more details, more hints and clues and more story (with this download, 47% is This Night So Dark and the rest is sample chapters of [b:These Broken Stars|13138635|These Broken Stars (Starbound, #1)|Amie Kaufman|https://d.gr-assets.com/books/1383578978s/13138635.jpg|18315607] and [b:This Shattered World|13138734|This Shattered World (Starbound, #2)|Amie Kaufman|https://d.gr-assets.com/books/1399982893s/13138734.jpg|18315710]). Also, I expected to see a crossover where we meet Jubilee from This Shattered World and see how she and Tarver know and interact with each other. But the only clue for This Shattered World is Tarver mentioning he was based on Avon a month or two ago.
While this isn't important to the series in my opinion (so if you miss it or decide not to read it but read This Shattered World), I think fans will enjoy this. And if you're curious over this series, this is free and there is sample chapters of These Broken Stars and This Shattered World, I would say go to it.
