Good book to pair with August Wilson's Fences

I went into this book with no expectations, but I finished this book in just a couple of hours, because it was so good. David Hayden, the main character, is recounting the events that happened within his family during the summer of 1948. He is twelve at the time, and they will change his life forever.

What a great little read. Liked reading from the view point of David. I'm glad the story didn't get into specifics.

The quaint small-town nostalgia I was expecting from this book turned out to be a brittle shell concealing something much darker and more substantial. I was completely hooked by the end of the two-page prologue, and can’t believe this small, perfect novel isn’t more widely known. It’s now shelved, in my imaginary library, alongside So the Wind Won't Blow it All Away by Richard Brautigan and Denis Johnson’s Train Dreams.
