I am so glad I endeavored to finish this book after a midway point respite. amor towles loves his characters so much that we cannot help to. he treats them with such care —not to say the narrative prevents them from setback or ill-circumstance— that I found myself welling up 10-20 times in the second half of this book (which I must say outdoes the first). although rules of civility kept me hooked 100% of the time, and I found this one to drag more, it’s one of those things you leave with such a strong, fierce sense of love and admiration there is no other number of stars but 5.

Yo this was really boring.
No matter how hard I try i just don’t think the day to day lives of European nobility will ever be interesting to me, especially if they are from 100+ years ago and are straight, white, and/or male, AND if that story is a 17-hour long book with no plot

I adore this book. Gorgeous writing, characters who become dear to the reader. Excellent and masterful.

Re-read in 2024 - lovely to revisit the Metropol.

Honestly, that voice put me right to sleep. I don't know much of anything that happened but best 21 days of sleep I've had in forever.

This book was delightful, and I am not sure why I haven’t been able to write a review for it... Maybe because I don’t want it to be over. The storytelling is masterful, rekindling my love for Tchaikovsky and carrying me through the depths of winter like I was sitting by the fire in a high backed chair with Count Alexander Ilyich Rostov. A friend described the writing in this book like chocolate, and I agree. This book is decadent, and one I am already looking back nostalgically on.
