I listened to this book at work and it made me laugh, it made me think, and it inspired me. JVN has been my favorite on Queer Eye since season one and I truly enjoyed learning more about him from his own POV. The audiobook is read by him so really get great intonation and emotion throughout. I had no idea some of the struggles he went through to get him where he is today, but I'm so grateful we get to benefit from his inspirational personality now.
I found this to be an inspiring tale of acceptance, resilience and self compassion. A very quick read which I devoured. If I could give it 4.5 stars, I would. The only reason I didn’t give it 5 was because he gave everyone fake Russian names and I found that to be a little silly.

Audiobook read by the author.
Loved listening to JVN read his own story.
Lots of traumatic stories, which stirred up my own trauma history.
I love how Jonathan has the courage to share all of this & be sensitive & supportive to people who have gone through similar things. He is open about his history even though it's difficult & shares how he still works on things.
I'm glad he has his Mom to rely on for so much of his life & then his step-dad as well. That they were there for him & that they had money to support him play an important part in his recovery & trauma work & he aknowleges that.

I knew I was going to like this book, because I adore JVN. I didn't know how much I would absolutely love this authentic, both equally hilarious and heartbreaking memoir. It is just how you imagine JVN, you can hear his voice and his truth in every line. I got a lot out of it on a personal level too. It's important to see and nurture yourself through both the good and bad you've been/are going through. JVN is a shining light in this space. I'm sure this book will be helpful on many levels, especially LGBTQ+. Inspiring.
I love Queer Eye and JVN's effervescent and infectious personality. His voice explodes out of the book, you totally read it with his voice in mind. The content is vulnerable, raw, and not always pretty and his honesty about the darker moments make me love him even more. But I did find myself tiring of the tedium of "gorgeous" and "queeeeen" and the shortening of words to achieve Cher Horrowitz-level coolness. For me, it distracted from many of the heavy topics he discussed, which may be how he felt comfortable enough to share it all. He still effectively created a memoir that was wholly him and perfect for any die-hard JVN fan.
