This had been on my TBR for *ages* having been a book club pick when it came out April of last year
It follows Gene, the first openly trans player in pro baseball, and Luis his former, and now current, teammate. They both dream of moving to the majors from their minor league team - at the story’s start, an expected move for Luis, more a dream for Gene - but if they can’t figure out how to get along again their chances of playing together well enough to make that happen for either one of them don’t look good.

Now, baseball isn’t my sport - it’s shocking how much I don’t know about it - so if you’re looking for notes in the book’s sport accuracy please look elsewhere.
There were some things - especially towards the end - that don’t seem like they could possibly be legit.
But what do I know, as a person who has never watched an entire game?
And only wishes to watch one that has lip syncing dance breaks ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

I loved getting to know the characters though. And not just Gene and Luis - though their building relationship was lovely - but also the side characters. Like Vince looking with disappointment at the end of his career but balancing it with hopes for expanding the family with his husband.
On that sports side though - There’s an entire thing with players at different points in their careers, and how difficult it can be to want to succeed as a team but still shine as an individual, especially when you’re either hoping to move up to a higher level or afraid of being pushed into a retirement you’re not ready for.

And the first time Gene sees an article praising him strictly for his sportning ability? My heart! He deserved (and needed!) that recognition

If you love baseball, this book should be a home run for you (did I do it? Did I get the sporty metaphor right?)
But even not being a fan of the sport, I still found the characters and their stories interesting

I wanted to love this book as it was the first trans baseball book I had come across but I just couldn’t connect with the characters or the journey they were on. There were many disabilities highlighted and I think that it was maybe a lot to juggle on top of the storylines because it felt flat and uninspired when it was brought into focus. The baseball games were fun to read.
