I loved this book. I loved both the hero and heroine and their families. I loved the writing style.
So why did I give it only 4 stars???
The name of the novel suggest this novel a romance, but its not. Its more like a story about two families. But yes, I would recommend this to anyone except those who want to read only romance.
And I almost forgot...Loved the balloon scene.

I've reviewed another edition of this book. I adore its sense of humour and I love the journey that Alverstoke goes on. Frederica and her family are good for him! But I wanted to write another review to say that this edition narrated by Joe Jameson is delightful. He's an excellent narrator. I had a previous audio edition narrated by Clifford Norgate and I found that one good but the narrator sounded like an old man. If you have the other copy, it's totally worth getting the new one with Joe Jameson, he feels more like Alverstoke to me.

This is absolutely one of my favourite Georgette Heyer books. The beginning is a little slow (as they always are in Heyer novels) but once Frederica is on the scene with her family, the book is a joy. Alverstoke is a mature cynical character with a fabulous sense of humour. Frederica is a competent and intelligent heroine. Her brothers bring so much fun to the book, especially seeing Alverstoke have to put himself out for them.
This book is about family, and the contrast between Alverstoke's lukewarm relationship with his own siblings vs. the tight knit Merrivale crew is entertaining.
I have read this book a dozen times and listened to multiple audio versions. It's a delight every time.

Re-read because [b:Sorcery and Cecelia|64207|Sorcery and Cecelia or The Enchanted Chocolate Pot Being the Correspondence of Two Young Ladies of Quality Regarding Various Magical Scandals in London and the Country (Cecelia and Kate, Book 1)|Patricia C. Wrede|http://photo.goodreads.com/books/1170621636s/64207.jpg|505] put me in the mood for another Regency romp. This remains one of the better Heyers, but I still think "Vernon" is a wholly unsuitable name for a romantic lead. Yes, I have a mental age of twelve sometimes.

I would have liked this better if Frederica and Averstoke had more time in the book together. Their parts shone to me. The kids were alright but they got so sooo much of the book devoted to their antics and it got to the point that every time Charis showed up I wanted to smack her too by the time the end rolled around. And I'm annoyed at how Charis's situation ended up given how much trouble her and her choice caused others. Seemed unfair somehow she never had to grow up at all and juat got what she wanted.
Also that lady whose house the kid got brought to was a nightmare of a person. Was she supposed to be comical? She was awful and I wish her stupid carpet got set on fire over how she behaved.
All in all the book had a lot of parts I liked but it seemed like the supposed main romance of the book was a passenger and not the driver and I think this book is better for people who have a lot of patience with other people's stupidity. A lot more than I've got. Or they just laugh at it instead of wanting to wring necks.
And the whole part with the dog causing the trouble with the cows was *really* upsetting to read as an animal lover, no matter how it turned out. I was upset for Lufra the whole time.

I thoroughly enjoyed Frederica!
The research is very well done — I kept forgetting that Heyer wrote in the mid-20th century. The characters are engaging and funny, (Felix has my heart 😂) the plotting is lighthearted and touching, and it’s just a pleasurable romp as a whole.
I wouldn’t recommend it to flighty young girls as the hero is what I would describe as morally grey, but he is redeemable enough that I personally did not find it repulsive. In fact, his character was one of my favorites 😂 Keep your head on straight and this book won’t do you any harm! In fact, I found it to be an excellent use of my time.
Now I must avoid being a “dead bore” as Lord Alverstoke says and go about my business. I’ve detained you long enough — get back to reading!
