I resonate with Becky Bloomwood, so much.
This book was fun and fluffy, and put me in the life of a girl on the other side of the world from me, who was average in most ways, and had the craziest shopping addiction. And I loved almost every second of it!
Kinsella writes in this comical way that not only pokes fun at real life issues, but also creates some relatable connection between readers and Becky.
She's not all that smart with her money, and has her head filled with fluff half the time, but still think thoughts that I have definitely thought before. ie. about not wanting to work :P
[b:Confessions of a Shopaholic|9416|Confessions of a Shopaholic (Shopaholic, #1)|Sophie Kinsella|https://d.gr-assets.com/books/1327872404s/9416.jpg|3237433] gave me a brief reprieve from the real world by letting me in to the sometimes chaotic, and sometimes ridiculous life Becky lives. I didn't take it too seriously and got to laugh many times at what she was getting up to! I don't think the point of the book is to tell everyone that if you do nothing, things will fall into your lap. It's just fun!

REALLY enjoyed it which is a relief bc over a few years i got the first four books in the series secondhand and i was like "what if i hate it i gotta read these before i get any more of them"
i really needed something lighthearted and fun and this definitely delivered. i know i liked the movie too but they're definitely quite different from what i can remember of the movie, though that's okay, being different from the source material is not always a bad thing but i DID picture isla fisher the entire time
anyway rebecca was a very fun and compelling character so i think i'm gonna like what's to come in the next eight (?) books!

Hm, hm, hm.
I saw the movie first, although I'm familiar with this book for years now. But I like the movie. Isla Fisher is adorable in it and the plot is cute and funny.
Now, when I started this book I had most of the scenes from the movie in my head. Becky is a red-haired girl, she buys green scarf, she doesn't work in SS... And yet not one of those things are in a book. It was like I was reading completely different book, or to say it like this: Movie is not based on this book. It's loosely inspired by it.
And that kind of was in front of me the whole time. Do I like the book? Sure I do, but there were times when I found it boring and sometimes annoying. Becky is cute and her troubles are hilarious but so immature at the same time and even nerve wracking sometimes. It looks like she has fallen from another planet in one minute and then in the next, she is the smartest person in the room.
I've read some other books that Kinsella wrote and liked it a lot, so maybe I feel like this about this book because I watched the movie so many times and I had bigger expectations.
Still it was enjoyable enough. Will probably continue with the series just to see what will happen next.

Really didn't enjoy this one, which is odd because I really like Sophie Kinsella books normally. It was really stressful, with all the dodging bills and spending too much! That's my anxiety trigger for sure. Won't be reading the rest of the series I imagine -- happily, since I've been reading only garbage this month. Hopefully, I'll read something slightly less chicklit-y in November!
Charming, fluffy, and entertaining. A calca on how to get in your own way.

If you're in your early 20's and the year is 2002, you are going to LOVE this book - or at least I did. I remember this novel as the first book that made me laugh out loud. I thought Becky's antics and inner monologue were so silly and funny. I ate this whole series up back then!
If you're in your 40's and the year is 2025, you are probably going to hate this book. I should have left this novel in my happy memories of 20+ years ago. It definitely didn't land the same for me during this reread. I was at least hoping for that warm nostalgic feeling I get like when I re-watch "Runaway Bride" for the umpteenth time, but it didn't really happen. All the materialism wasn't cute, her debt gave me anxiety, and the romance was lame. How everything came together at the end was just ridiculous, it felt more YA that I remember. I only laughed out loud at one part this go around - the Finnish bit (IFYKYK).
2002 read = 5 stars
2025 read = 2 stars
So I'll just meet in the middle and say it's a 3 star read - just depends on your age and what decade you read it in!
