Terribly written
I went into Dead Poets Society with high hopes, especially because the movie is one of my all-time favorites. Unfortunately, the book didn’t come close to capturing the emotional impact or depth that made the film so powerful. It felt more like a surface-level retelling than a fully developed novel.
The characters, who felt so layered and real on screen, came across as flat and underwritten here. Key moments that were heartbreaking or inspiring in the film just didn’t land the same way in the book—they felt rushed, almost like they were just checking off scenes rather than building emotion. I found myself disconnected from the story, even during the most pivotal scenes.
The themes of rebellion, self-expression, and loss are still present, but they lack the nuance and weight the movie delivered so well. I missed the atmosphere, the intensity of the performances, and the raw emotional pull that made the story unforgettable.
If you’ve seen the movie, this book may feel like a pale shadow of it. For me, it didn’t evoke the same feelings at all—and that was the biggest letdown.

O Captain! My Captain.
Carpe diem, seize the day boys, make your lives extraordinary
I didn't think I would ever be able to finish this book but here we are. At first it was hard to read it but after about 80 pages I got better into it. Well, at least there's many good quotes.
(Un)fortunately I watched the movie - several times, actually - before reading this book. Some scenes made more sense after reading it because in movie they weren't fully explained.
"Welton Academy, hello? Yes, he is, just a moment. Mr. Nolan, it's for you," - "It's God. He said we should have girls at Welton"

I don’t really know what to say about this book, it’s short, consists but packs one hell of a punch. It makes you really think about life, and the impact you want your life to have. It’s moving and sad and inspiring all at the same time. It teaches you to look for the true beauty in the world, and to stand for what you believe in.

I wish it was longer, but at the same it's perfect. I've finished it in a day and I think that was one of the most important books I've read in my life. Some of the things were different from the movie and I really didn't like him: for example at the party (movie) knox kissed chris's forehead gently, and in the book he molested her by touching her boobs while she was kissing with her boyfriend.. Todd's character development was really noticeable and the whole book is just amazing, but there are a lot of shortcomings. Let me explain - in the movie, you see everything so you can sense the atmosphere in the during moment, the place they are in, their faces and clothes, and even slightest smiles and quick eye contacts. In the book, a lot of important descriptions like that have been skipped and it made it a bit bland (at least to my liking - I'm in love with the books that are really long and descriptive). It wasn't bad, no, it was amazing but objectively talking, I would recommend watching the movie instead of reading the book, and if you want to read it -> watch the movie first (saying this as someone who did the opposite). The book also has some of the deleted scenes that didn't make it into the movie!
Overall - would recommend as a light read (you can finish it in 3 hours), but the movie is just better.
