I was really captivated by this book and kept finding reasons to get back in my seat to keep reading. And I so rarely enjoy memoirs. Why this one? I'd like to say it's character parts from the 90s and knowing he loves dogs driving my interest, but I think it's also because this collaboration doesn't land heavily in the structure tropes of memoir. This is pretty good story-telling for a memoir.
Trejo is not a perfect man…far from it. He committed many crimes and treated a lot of people poorly. That being said, he has done a lot of good too - including helping many, many people with recovery. This was an interesting book and a great reminder that people are multifaceted and flawed.
3.5 Stars
I was intrigued when I stumbled upon this book. I grew up seeing Danny Trejo in various movies, but I never knew anything about his past. So, this book intrigued me. It’s a raw book. He talks openly about his life and the way he changed it, the imperfections he was still left with after managing to turn his life around. I love the honesty, the introspection. This is who he is and that’s ok. The man managed to not only change his life, but so many other through his work and story. And I hope that anyone that reads this book takes something with them. I guess the thing I’ll take is that “It is never too late to turn your life around if you, yourself find the motivation to do it. Life’s not perfect, it may never be perfect, but it can get better!”.

I will recommend this book to everyone. Trejo is such an interesting and inspiring person. He tells his life story in a detailed way that is so easy to consume. If you appreciate sobriety journeys this is a must-read.
I don’t write reviews normally but I have to for Trejo because the underlying message is a life changer! I had no idea what the book was about before listening, but have been a huge fan of Danny’s forever so I got it.
This book is essentially a 13 hour testimony to the power and grace of God. So many moments in the book where Danny heard the voice of the Lord and then obeyed, and amazing things happened. Nobody is perfect and sanctification is a life long journey with ups and downs. Danny’s story is no exception, and to be honest, the stuff he’s been thorough and the challenges he has faced over the years while still staying true to God through all of it, blows my mind! The stronger his faith got, the harder the challenges he faced. This book has also made me realize that I have nothing to complain about, and that I need to step up and help others more just like Danny does without any hesitation. I am going to buy copies of this book to give to people that are struggling with addictions and others looking for help in other ways. I know Danny’s story can help so many people and I am thankful for Danny Trejo and his amazing testimony!

I didn’t know much about him, barely seen any of his movies besides spy kids and a trailer for machete lol, but as he went through his filmography I realized I had seen a lot more where he’s had cameos.
How did this rough ass Mexican dude fall into acting? Was literally the whole reason I picked this up and wow was it crazy. Starting off with childhood drama and crime and the toughest prisons to him being a recovery advocate and getting started in films playing ex cons and such. Wild. His family life was less interesting to me but I’m glad his kids’ addictions had a happy ending.
