I listened to the audiobook, which was nicely narrated.

I really liked the romance and the parts of the book that focused on the astronaut training program and Joan’s AS-CAN cohort. I struggled to care about the family drama and the tension with Barbara. And someone on Reddit described the Frances storyline as *being trapped in a conversation with a parent who is monologuing about how uniquely special and brilliant their child is*, which is exactly how I felt too.

The book pretty much lost me once
Joan finally got to go on a mission only to discover that her maternal feelings basically made her allergic to being in space 🙄.
I was tempted to DNF at that point, and though ultimately I did end up listening to it all the way through, I never really got past how infuriating that was.

It’s been a while since I cried like this. So happy and sad, feeling so seen and feeling so much like I’m seeing into the lives of others.
What a beautiful story with beautiful reflection. What a beautiful explanation of what it is to be human and to love science and to see how it brings us all together. What a beautiful reminder that we once progressed towards the pursuit of knowledge as a county and as a world. Wow.

May not be my favorite narrative/story structure novel that Taylor has ever written, but the focus on character and reflection really met me, personally, where I was at. Joan’s reflections on her life experiences mirror how I internally process, and this novel does such a good job showing how it feels to be understood.
