I absolutely freakin’ love this book! Read it for the first time as a Junior in high school, then used it for a literary criticism paper for one of my literature classes in college. Seriously one of my favorite American Classics.

It gives a really good insight to life of the working class (specifically, migrant farmers) in the United States during the Great Depression, and keeps to the general disheartened mood of those who were negatively effected by the depression. It also touches on developmental disabilities and how those with such disabilities were treated.

Beware: there are references of animal and character deaths in this book - both of which are graphic-ish

i just generally didn’t like the book. i was forced to read it for school and thought it has the most mind-boring plot ever.

Read it for school as I'm sure most people did. It's alright; way shorter than I thought it would be. The writing is good, but it also comes across as a little bit whiney and pessimistic, and it ends up sounding like every other book written and set in that era of time. It's extremely hard to like any of the characters, which might be the point but it made it kind of a slog to read even though it's so short.

Really loved this read! I’m not usually a classical fan but this story sucked me in. I loved analyzing the countless symbols, foreshadowing and layers of themes this book presented. A very simple, short, engaging commentary on both human nature and life in the depression. Steinbeck is truly a genius.

This story is very slow moving but beautifully written nonetheless. I’m not really sure what the point of the book was tbh. And the ending scene sort of just happens and then the book is over. I’m left wanting more but also not really wanting to read anymore because it was just a sad story that evoked nothing deeper than sadness and anger at the ableism.
