Dexter's Final Cut

Jeff Lindsay

3.39 AVERAGE

**SPOILER ALERT**

This last book in the series was disappointing mainly because Dexter was not the Dexter we grew to love.

Dexter was dense, conceited, and self-absorbed; he exuded human emotions such as lust and envy. Lusting after some actress mainly because of her looks; and envious of her lifestyle. The first half of the book was mainly about how crappy his home life was - his wife was getting old, he didn't care for his kids, he didn't make enough money.
Oh god the wife, I can't tell you how many times he critiqued her; did he forget that he didn't marry her because of love but because it gave his little lifestyle an alibi? His treatment of his wife was just sad and disgusting at times.

Dexter wasn't Dexter, and at the end when he does decide to act like himself, going after the pedophile and murderer of two people, he gets caught, and is saved by the none other than his daughter.

What was this supposed to even be about? Dexter's demise? Well if so, then it really sucked. The only reason I gave it 2 stars was because it did pick up somewhat at the end, when the cause of his earthly emotions was killed, but even then the ending left a bad and unfulfilled taste in my mouth.

At the moment of writing this, I just put the novel down, having shut the book for the last time of the day. And then I thought. I'm hungry. It's very rare when a book can make me push aside my Notorious Needs, but, Damn, Dexter Does. As the name suggests, the ending heavily implies this to be the final of the series, and what an energetic ending it was.

This time, our Dashing Dexter is tasked with the the job of being a body guard to Majestic Movie star Jackie Forrest outside of work, who is in town as the lead actress in the pilot of a new television series. During the day, Dexter has another job - teaching actor Robert (not Bob!) about the art of forensics.
All is not well in Dexterland, because Jackie has a stalker. A stalker of the kind only Dark Dexter can help with. Or does he...

Are my alliterations arduous? I tried. Maybe I should save those for Jeff Lindsay.

This is by far the worst book in the series [well, I haven't read the last one but it just CAN'T be worse. It can't] and unfortunately heavily features a plotline that I always hated from the show i.e. Dexter - despite being presented as pretty heavily asexual early on in the series - chasing after random women and doing incredibly stupid things because of his 'feelings' for them.

I'm sure it is somehow a play by the author to make Dexter more 'human' and 'relatable' but 1. if I wanted to read a story about someone with neurotypical emotions I would not be reading a book about a serial killer and 2. trying to make your main character more relatable by having him cheat on his wife is probably a swing and a miss for most people. I know I know, adultery is way less 'bad' than murder in the grand scheme of things, but it still feels unnecessary and I don't need an entire chapter of Dexter describing some woman's breasts.

Also this book features some pretty graphic and sexual violence towards women as part of the main serial killer plot line and I had to put the book down and stop reading for a few days at several points because it just wasn't something I wanted to deal with. It is objectively not any worse than some other things that have happened in the series - especially book 2 - but I think it's something a lot of women are just sick of seeing since we are bombarded with it quite a lot in media.

As I said before, I somehow never read the last book in this series - I thought this was less of a cliffhanger and more of an open ending so I didn't even realize he was planning to write another one at the time - so I'm going to move on to that next. This series has been going slowly downhill over the last few books so I don't have high hopes for it but I guess anything can happen.

And the curse is broken

This is the penultimate of Lindsay's Dexter novels and, of those I have read thus far, the weakest. It moves very slowly and has a painfully obvious antagonist. In addition, I once heard Lindsay say that he never saw his Dexter character as some sort of hero (or more likely anti-hero) and this novel did make that abundantly clear. The novel is about 350 pages long and moves at a snail's pace for the first 300 and then has a bit of a hanging conclusion. It's necessary to read as part of the series, but weak on its own, as a novel.

This book was a little frustrating, because Dexter was so unlike himself in this novel. I disliked that he was so willing to abandon Astor, Cody, and especially Lily Anne. We went from doting dad who wanted to change his murderous ways in the 5th book to I’m ok with seeing her on the weekends in this one. What a jump. And Dexter being obsessed with an actress and fame is a huge stretch. I also didn’t like that there was no mention of Brian in this book, after he’s been prevalent in the last few novels. However, the death of a beloved character and the way things came crashing down at the end makes the ending very powerful and very sad. I do look forward to seeing how the series ends and all I can hope is that the last book is much better than this one.

I thinks this is the best in the Dexter Series after Dexter#5:[b:Dexter Is Delicious|7469133|Dexter Is Delicious (Dexter, #5)|Jeff Lindsay|https://images.gr-assets.com/books/1428935042s/7469133.jpg|9552554].
