Maya Angelou has a magical power. That power is writing so beautifully that you can't believe you are reading actual words. I am in awe. This woman is incredibly talented and I will never shut up about her. Everyone should read something by her. It would be a crime not to.

I can’t say that I understood or related to a good portion of her work, but there were some that were truly outstanding.
Still I Rise
Ain’t That Bad?
On Aging
Caged Bird
The Lie
and Phenomenal Woman were some of my favorites.
In other poems, it felt like there was a huge generational gap. Issues that don’t seem so pressing like diet culture and respect for your elders.
Overall, I’m glad to have read this one!

"That cool spring was shortened by your summer, bold impatient and all forgotten"
She is an icon, but I hated this edition because it is just UGLY, and it distracts so much from the actual content. The font, margins and organization make it very difficult to read.

Selfishly, I rated this collection 4 stars. While Angelou deserves 5 stars for her genius, and the collection is masterfully put together, I am simply not drawn to Angelou’s style as much as other poets. However, it was lovely to read beyond her few famous poems.

This is a phenomenal collection of poetry. Insightful, enlightening, humorous, heartbreaking, lyrical, amazing. The range of topics and style makes each poem feel unique. I really loved the flow and rhythm of the poems. Some of my favorites were "Phenomenal Woman", "Willie", "One More Round", "Still I Rise", "Life Doesn't Frighten Me", "In Retrospect", "Caged Bird", and "The Last Decision" (pretty much everything in Shaker, Why Don't You Sing was a hit for me). I really enjoyed the flow of the poetry throughout the book as well. By Shaker, Why Don't You Sing, you can really tell how much Angelou matured and evolved in her writing.
