Really enjoyed. Interesting glimpse into the '70's in Atlanta Police dept and race, women, etc.
Coptown is set in 1974 Atlanta and Kate Murphy is about to experience her first day on the police force. Not only has Kate walked into a misogynist work environment tensions are high after the death of a couple of police officers. Kate is eventually teamed up with Maggie who comes from a family of cops but that does not mean she has any special privileges in this man's world. The two of them begin to investigate the murders and try to discover who the 'shooter' is.
I have never read any of Karin Slaughter's work before and had no expectations as to what I was getting into. What intrigued me was the setting 1974 Atlanta and as you read, you understand why the novel is set in the past.
This is hard to read, the treatment of women is awful in this book but so is the treatment of everyone else. No one is spared the hatred, abuse, bullying and violence in this story and there are very few redeeming characters. So why keep reading? It is an engaging story and Slaughter is able to hook you in. The characters are well developed and you find yourself torn between wanting to support them in their endeavours or slap them for being awful.
I enjoyed the read.

Solid 3 stars for me.
I had real trouble getting into the story and only really started enjoying it about 150 pages in. Even then the pacing dragged on a bit, but I was at least invested in the story at that point.
This book made me feel very uncomfortable with all its genuinely horrible and violent characters. The displays sexism and racism almost made me DNF, and I was glad when we started to learn more about the protagonists’ personalities and saw a little less of how badly they were treated by the people around them.
Generally, not a bad story and I did enjoy it after the first hurdle. Really liked the writing style and will definitely give other Karin Slaughter books a go.

Entertaining story with all characters being flawed in some way.
This book is hard to put down. Takes place in Atlanta in the 70's. Yes it is about cops! Good ones and bad ones!
3.5 stars. Entertaining enough. I enjoyed that our two main characters are women trying to navigate being a cop in the 1970s. There just wasn’t enough substance for me to truly love this book as much as I hoped.
An overall OK crime/thriller novel.

4/5 star rating
I chose this book on the basis I've read Slaughter books before and enjoyed them, I didn't want to go back to the series I was reading as I have a lot if books I have to read and don't want to be tied into finishing the series.
So I chose Cop Town as it is one of Slaughters stand alone books
The storyline centres around a small town in Atlanta in 1974 where a killer is on the loose who is targeting cops. Why are they choosing cops as the targets? Well that's something I obviously can't reveal as you'll have to read for yourself.
The book focuses on lots of the social aspects of the time, for example racism/segregation. Sexism in the workplace. Homophobia. At times this can feel a bit like it's being drummed into us how bad things were and detracts from the storyline, however saying that it does add to the story and does give us pause for thought.
The 2 key characters were female and we get to see from their point of view how the system is against them. There are very graphic scenes, but that is Slaughters best points how she can describe a scene in such a vivid sense.
I would recommend this book to fans of crime and thrillers and also to those that like their history

Not as good as others of hers but still entertaining
