I liked it okay. I'm reading the Wallander books in order and this wasn't my favorite of the series. I love Mankell's writing, however, and I look forward to reading more of his work.
One thing did bother me, however. On the last page of the book, it says that Wallander's father had never been on a plane before. Didn't he take one to and from Egypt in "The Pyramid". I could be remembering incorrectly. Anyone else notice that?

I worried because I saw the Masterpiece Theater version of this before I read the book, so I knew most of the story. By the end of the book I was reminded of how much richer and deeper a good read can be, even compared to a really thoughtful film or show. I've read a few of the Wallander books and this is my favorite. There's so much emotion and drama contained here, and a very tasteful treatment of some gritty and distasteful material. A great introduction to Wallander, if you haven't read any of the other titles in the series.

A much darker entry in the series, more akin to Dennis Lehane, but also one of the more intriguing from a psychological perspective.
I've really appreciated the inclusion of Hoglund since last book, and the continued/increased inclusion of Wallander's family. More so, I'm thankful for Wallander's growth in that he's somewhat stopped trying to do everything himself all the time, ha. Good portrayal/continuation of Wallander dealing with his trauma from previous books.
