The Perfect Mother

It's been a while since I devoured a book in a day and a half, but this one kept me guessing until the very end, thus making it worth losing sleep over. The author has a masterful use of narration and gave us just enough information to keep us guessing. At first it was a little difficult to keep track of which May Mother was which, but that didn't keep me from loving the book. I related to the idea of making friends with a group of women based solely on the fact that you gave birth around the same time. I recognized myself and other moms in some of these women, which made it an even more interesting read. I found the prologue a bit unrealistic, but I won't go into details since I don't want to give anything away. Great, quick, engaging summer read.

I found the story engaging, and a few of the characters struck me as real and sympathetic. But ultimately the plot left a bad taste in my mouth. A series of people dealing with misfortunes are presented as potential villains as the mystery unfolds--including a rape victim, someone who is bipolar, and a grieving mother who lost a baby at birth.

4.5 stars - Loved this audiobook! Great narrator and suspenseful story. One of the character, Francie, was a bit overboard but I didn't find this book to be predictable as many in this genre tend to be.

Listening to this, the story was alright, it was engaging enough, but the twist felt like it came out of nowhere? But not necessarily in a good way

This book perfectly encapsulates what first time motherhood was like for me. Plus, there’s a mystery that I didn’t easily solve.

I really enjoyed the way Molloy portrayed the relationships between the women characters. I obviously have no experience with new motherhood but it seemed like she captured many of the struggles and emotions that accompany that experience. I liked 3 of the 4 main characters but the one I didn’t like brought the rating down for me. Francie was one of the most annoying people I’ve ever read. The ending was satisfying.

Thinly drawn characters, dumb mystery.

Motherhood is the main plot point

A fast thriller read. Not my genre really. I think I'd prefer reading a Liane Moriarty.
And yet, no reading rut here.
