This book started off really strong and I for sure anticipated it being a favorite. But I was bored by the author’s matter-of-fact writing style and the repetitive descriptions/scenes. Oh well.

I entered a reading slump for a good month or two, and at least a small part of it was because I was not looking forward to continuing this book. (Also seasonal depression and life getting in the way, but, you know)

I was really excited about this book when I first heard about it in 2022, it hit all my buzzwords that I love. I was so excited to read it once I could borrow it from the library.

I'm glad I didn't buy it, it was so disappointing for me. Mainly my problem was the relationship development (or lack thereof) of our two love interests. It felt like it was moving much too quickly, there was barely any time at all for the two to start feeling attraction to each other.

In my mind, ideally the two of them would barely stand being in the same room as each other and not care about each other in the slightest until AT LEAST a third of the way through, halfway would be even better. Instead it was at like the 10% mark when "hints" of potential romantic feelings were already being dropped.

I can understand other people enjoying it, it was just too fast moving for my taste. There was an attempt at building atmosphere and general world-building, but I've read other books that pulled it off way better than this.

I'd give it 2⭐ if I had to rate it

Lakesedge is the richly dark first book in a new fantasy series by Lyndall Clipstone, and it was a a captivating read over the course of a hot Saturday. Clipstone has built an intriguing world, and I look forward to spending more time with her characters. Looking forward to re-reading it in physical form, especially in the fall when I most prefer my creepy fantasy reads!

Nothing wrong with this. It just didn't do anything for me and the characters irritated me most of the time.

I honestly don't know how to review this book. Even at the end I was still confused, like I was missing some important part of the story.

Lakesedge felt like a scrapbook dedicated to Hades and Persephone, Alice in Wonderland, love triangles, and quippy one liners, but the person making the scrapbook was high.

I enjoyed the little details of the book and there is nothing inherently wrong with the writing style, but somehow it still felt incomplete and discombobulated. The romance was sweet but came at the most unexpected moments. Same with the quippy dialogue: it made me smile, but came after such intense scenes that it gave me whiplash.

The premise held so much promise and I definitely enjoyed the twists and turns of how we got to the end, but I feel like I still don't understand anything that happened or why.

Overall it was not a bad debut novel and I may read it again to see what I missed before attempting book two.
