funny lighthearted fast-paced

Recommended to me by a friend, David Sedaris has such a great way of slicing into the awkwards moments of life and offering them up to a reader (or listener, in my case) on your grandmothers china you don’t really know what to do with. But you’re a guest, so you’re going to eat it, chuckling the whole time.

There’s a few stories in here I winced at, wondering if they were totally politically correct (and I mean that word, with all its complicated connotations) in the modern age. But their meta-awkwardness of the new social context around topics like disability, immigration, and language still felt relevant in the fact that as clean and nice as we try to make life: it’s a mess. And Sedaris understands that, bearing his for us all to look at and think of what a great, weird thing this life we all have is.

A funny, often darkly funny, mess. I’m glad David Sedaris writes, because I know I want to listen more. (I’d highly recommend the audiobook)

funny lighthearted medium-paced

I was hungry for more Sedaris after finishing Calypso (which I loved!), and so I picked this up.

While definitely not as good, this absolutely has some laugh out loud moments. A wonderful light read, it was just what I needed to break up some meatier books I’ve been reading lately.

I’d definitely recommend it, David Sedaris has a beautifully distinct style and is really very funny, I’d suggest him to anyone! I’m eager to read a few more of his. Rated three but only because I gave Calypso four!

So funny and moving. Sedaris is able to make uncomforable things hilarous. I love is ability to poke fun at himslf and ohers but seem nice doing it.

insightful, hilarious, and inspiring!! definitely a sedaris fan now.

funny

This might have been the most fun I’ve ever had reading a book - literally smiling ear to ear to myself like a dummy - and it seems fitting I got it recommended from an entirely boring date ages ago. I think David Sedaris would appreciate that.

Some of my favorite short stories, though truly I loved them all, were “Twelve Moments in the Life of the Artist”, “You Can’t Kill the Rooster”, “The Great Leap Forward”, “Me Talk Pretty One Day”, and “Jesus Shaves”.

I rented my copy from the library and someone penciled in a new favorite quote of mine that I truly don’t remember reading in the book but that fits great: “I haven’t got the slightest idea how to change people, but still I keep a long list of prospective candidates just in case I should ever figure it out”.

“Certain motherfuckers think they can fuck with my shit, but you can’t kill the Rooster. You might can fuck him up sometimes, but, bitch, nobody kills the motherfucking Rooster. You know what I’m saying?”
