Disclaimer: I am English and have never heard of David Sedaris before. Was very interested in the sections about speech and language learning. Some of the essays have great voice (liked the one about his brother) but many are mundane and told in a fairly grating tone. Maybe he could've included some more material on his (seemingly quite unique) experiences with crystal meth and modern art, rather than bore us with his father's opinions on his sister's weight and that one really really appalling "essay" that is literally about a shit in a toilet...
This book is so hard to rate since it is a collection of stories as opposed to a consistent narrative. There were some that I enjoyed. But there were several that were so forgettable I forgot I had already read them by the next day when I picked the book back up again. So normally I might have given this book a middle of the road 3 stars. But then there were also a couple of stories that just featured too flippant of descriptions of animal cruelty for my liking. This isn't funny or entertaining, and it would keep me from ever reading any of it again.

For both comedic and sentimental reasons, this is my favorite book of all time. I found it at a very untethered time in my life, and I re-read it about once a year now. This has everything - humor, wit, emotional moments, optimism, and everything I love about David Sedaris’ writing.
