This book was cute! I really really loved the use of italics when characters were communicating with sign. It was a great way to represent a visual language.
Unfortunately this book felt like it was for a much younger audience. It takes place at a summer camp, with our main character Lilah being 17, but it felt like she could've been 13 and the story would've been the exact same. Her inner dialogue was very difficult for me to get through because she was just so whiny.
I'm ultimately glad I read this book though, because it was terrific representation of the Deaf community.

I'm probably over-rating this, but I'm just so happy this book exists. I've never seen my own hearing impaired experience depicted in a novel. Lilah's loss is more severe than mine is, and she has more trouble passing in a hearing world, but I could still relate so vividly to many of her experiences. Representation is powerful, y'all.
This was sweet. The romance felt a bit forced at first and the main character was pretty immature, but I appreciate how much she grew throughout the book. Some of it was a bit repetitive, but overall a nice introduction to deaf culture and big summer camp vibes.

Beautiful and infuriating
I'm 👂🏼 and this is about a🦻🏼girl. I love reading because it's the closest you can get to walking in someone else's shoes. I'm not fluent in ASL but I love it. I'm neurodivergent and sometimes I feel an intense desire to be selectively mute. I understand what it feels like to be on the outside. I believe blunt is the quickest way to solve miscommunication. What I don't understand is the cruelty deaf people experience. Living it through the character makes me angry and sad. But the book isn't sad, it's mostly sweet. Trauma happens and people grow and learn. I want to see the majority do better. Representation helps.

this book has such great discussions about what it's like to feel stuck between the Deaf and hearing worlds. lilah has a hearing loss and illustrates perfectly what it's like to feel like you don't meet the world's expectations - she doesn't know enough ASL to feel comfortable identifying as Deaf, but not hearing enough to meet the hearing world's expectations
lilah decides to work at the deaf and blind summer camp she went to as a kid and brush up on her ASL. in the process, she finds friends and a community... and a really cute Deaf boy named isaac who offers to help lilah with her ASL
this book has great discussions, is vulnerable, and is also just plain cute! it's a classic summer romance while talking and engaging in Deaf culture and discussions about disability, accessibility, and community.
as a heads up, this book is written entirely in english/the signed parts aren't in gloss. (gloss is the English written translation of ASL. ASL is NOT signed English; it's an entirely separate language with its own words and grammar structure.)
i have fond memories of reading this book in a beanbag chair while eating chocolate ice cream. I remember rushing back to my apartment after class because i couldn't wait to read more of it <3
