I'm grateful that someone has taken the care (and risk) to document the bravery of the people fighting for women's rights in China. It's unfortunate that I found the author's writing style too dry to convey the tension, tragedy, and incremental triumphs of these heroes. It was hard to finish reading this despite how important and fascinating the subject matter is otherwise.

Also, I learned from this book that until early 2016, Xi Jinping was called the equivalent of "Big Daddy Xi" and wow, what a time to be alive.

Author Hong Fincher documents the feminist movement in China and the threats it faces brought to
attention in spring 2015 with the jailing of the women’s rights activists known as the Feminist Five.

I feel so ignorant about the culture in China and it's eye opening that women across the globe do not have the basic rights and freedom that we women in America have.

An interesting book with some insights I had not read before. I plan to find Leta Hong Fincher's other book - Leftover Women - to learn more about the experiences of some women in China.

I find it so hard to review non-fiction, but let’s give it a go! I learnt a whole lot from this book- honestly at some points I was just floored by how unbelievable the situation is for women in China right now. This was also quite a short, fast read which would be good for anyone interested in learning more, but are intimidated by non-fiction books- it read more like an extended article. On the flip side, I wish the author had spent some more time giving us these women’s backstory and doing a bit more of a deep dive into how they came to be involved in the movement, and the affect of their imprisonment on a larger scale. Highly recommend this one if it’s something your interested in.
