Faithless in Death

J.D. Robb

4.31 AVERAGE

Just read this. It's #52 for a reason.

When a young artist is killed, and it is reported by a socialite after leaving the scene and going home to call her lawyer/fiance before contacting police more than an hour after the crime was committed, Dallas and Peabody suspect that more is going on than just shock from a murder. The trail of clues leads them to something much bigger that will take all of the resources of both the police department and the FBI to figure out.

While Faithless in Death starts a bit slow with what appears to be a simple murder case, layers upon layers of evidence begin to pile up and that is when the book starts to move into overdrive. Although this story doesn't have the personal connection that some of the other cases in this series have, it still builds suspense that leads to a very timely and satisfying case, making the book very difficult to put down right up to the very end. Almost every character from previous books is involved in solving the mystery builds the need to rush to get to the end and find out what is going to happen. Overall, Faithless in Death is another very worthwhile addition to the In Death Series.

Called to the murder of an up and coming artist, something about the situation does not sit well with Eve. Is it the two wine glasses in the bedroom? Or the fact that it took an hour for the woman who found the body to call it in? Or that she had her lawyer with her when they reached her?

As she digs deeper, the questions continue to pile up. Soon she is involved with the FBI and Interpol, investigating a global organization with sinister goals.

This entry in the series is smooth as silk. The formula just flows. We interact with Eve's team and their co-horts. We touch base with friends like Mavis. The newest uniformed member of her crew gets to shine. It's a joy to read. That's why it's four stars.

And yet... The subject here is huge. It's almost ripped from the headline because it is inspired by so much of what we've seen of political and religious leaders. It feels like it's too much to take down in one book. This could have been an opponent who gave Eve trouble. Who maybe took more than one book to completely be defeated.

Eve has more than one nemesis: the candy thief, the vending machines, Dickhead and Summerset. The only big one is the ghost of her past and even that is starting to wear down and be resolved. It's wonderful that Eve and her team, with the help of Roarke, Nadine and their friends are so good at what they do and the endings are so clean.

I think I'd just like to see her challenged a little more.

I love this series. Down to my bones.

In this the 52nd release, Eve is sent to the murder of an artist. First appearances, it is a possible lovers spat. But, really, this single murder reveals a much more organized deception and con.

Yes, the series is formulaic, but it's a formula that works. My favorite parts are always the coordinated takedown and the interrogation. The ones in this book don't disappoint.

The return of so many of our favorite characters (including Jenkinsons' tie and sock combos), and the introduction of new ones makes me very happy. As a reader, I've decided Nora must live forever so I never run out of In Death stories to read. Make it so, Laura.

In the course of investigating a murder, Dallas deals with a quasi-religious group who uses religion to justify their hatred, racism, homophobia, misogyny, and violence, much like the Republican party of today (2016-2021). Reading about their takedown gave me so much joy! If only real life would mirror fiction!

I wouldn't have ever thought of those culprits and Eve's intuitiveness steady amazes me. No matter how many books in this series that I read I never get tired and I always enjoy the twists and turns involved in solving the mystery.
