I knew going in that there would be some form of livestock animal cruelty due to the MCs job. But the two instances of domestic animal abuse made me sick to my stomach. I had to skips those parts altogether because it made me so uncomfortable. I just feel we could know how fucked up a character’s psyche is without resorting to things like that but if the author’s sole purpose was making a visceral emotional impact then I guess mission accomplished.

The writing is truly phenomenal. This was a really disturbing read and has a WILD ending. Docking a star due to personal preferences regarding triggers (animal).

thanks to netgalley for an arc of this title! i had mixed feelings about nash’s previous title “animals eat each other,” so i went into this one with similar expectations but i really enjoyed this one. dee-dee/daisy is such a nuanced character, and watching the ways the mental illness and religious tumult have corrupted her mind was a wild ride from start to finish. it would have been a solid 5 stars for me if not for several concepts being introduced and kept pretty open ended, and i could see the ending coming about halfway through the book. otherwise, a very compelling character study.
