These are some great tips on how to treat curly hair! I switched to the recommended products, albeit a less expensive version, and I've changed the way I style my hair. I've gotten so many compliments lately on how pretty and bouncy my hair looks! I'm still not where I want to be with it, but I'm getting there.
So why just four stars? It's pretty cheesy in places. Really cheesy. It's meant to be funny and lighthearted, but it doesn't really work. Regardless, if you have curly hair, take the advice given in this book. Don't expect miracles overnight; give it time to work.

I mean, it’s a book about hair. You get what you get. My questions were mostly answered, so it served its purpose.

I think this book is really helpful and has a lot of good information. It maybe goes over the top a bit with criticism of mainstream haircare, in that "let's make this hip and accessible!" kind of way, but if you get past that to the straight advice for curly and wavy hair, it's pretty good. I like that it covers several different types of curls and explains what each is and specific needs for that type. It's always been frustrating for me that my thick wavy hair is hard to manage with most hair products, but a lot of products specifically for curly hair are too intense and heavy for me. Curly Girl does a great job of explaining how to work around that with a very straightforward plan as far as what type of products to use and how to apply them.
It's also very helpful that there is a section of the book on how to change up your style with updos, special occasions, what to do when your hair is at the gym or pool, etc.

Hair care. Hair styling. Hair type.
Author and hairdresser to curly haired women explains in her guide about the different types of curls, hair care and hair styling.
The book is broken down into chapters, which in addition to the core text, include "curl confessions," photos and facts and tips.
The author is the founder and co-owner of a salon especially for women with curly hair. Having curly hair herself, her personal and professional experience make this book worth checking out.
I borrowed this book from the library looking for new information, and while reading realized I'd read it 15 years before! Back then I followed the curly girl method of no-poo and drying and styling. I remember it working really well! The only reason I can think of why I stopped is that I moved. Well, no time like the present to return to what works and I look forward to starting again. This edition came with a DVD which is helpful in showing her explanations. My only wish would be that a new edition come out, perhaps with guides to products found worldwide.

I will admit I skimmed through some sections that did not apply to me, such as hair coloring, and the like. While I enjoyed it, it was a bit over the top. Horoscope curls, curly affirmations... some of this may be useful to others, but not my cup of tea. I did like the authors suggestions for curls, and also for products and recipes for hair care. But not bad!

Good basic hair care routine and advice but oh my bob are there ever a lot of ridiculous testimonials and little blurbs from people who are devoted to the religion of the curly girl method. The cultishness is a bit off putting. It’s just hair people.

Great overview but I recommend doing further research for specific processes. I wonder if some of the advice is a little too extreme (like can I really NEVER straighten my hair ever again, even just once in a blue moon?) But it is a good strategy for getting the most out of your naturally curly hair. Also, I recommend the kindle version for in book videos!

Just for the record, I have wavy hair, not curly.
Anyway, while the method itself is pretty good and works nicely, I can't say I enjoyed the book at all.
There are testimonies every five pages about people who had some trauma about their hair (which might be something I don't relate to because, well, wavy hair). It seriously felt like I was reading a book about traumatic events people went through on their childhood and how they finally managed to overcome that trauma... by taking care of their hair.
Anyway, it got so damn tedious that I basically just skimmed through most of the chapters trying to get something of value. But all the value I got was already on the internet by searching on the curly girl/guy method.
So, the only thing worth taking from this is the method, which you can find on the internet but I think it originated from this book so credit is given to the author. Otherwise, it truly felt like a waste of time.

As somebody with wavy hair that is quite dry and frizzy, this book gives a lot of good tips. I can't say if they will work out, I am going to try it out.
