I received an AR copy from a friend, and it came highly recommended. The story is set in a culture that I am not familiar with and steeped in folklore that was foreign to me. The author has twisted fiction with actual folklore to create an amazing world filled with living breathing characters. I struggled with the main female character’s personality at times but in those struggles I identified with some of her personality traits. Overall the characters failed and succeeded realistically which I appreciated. Some of the finer points of folklore were confusing to me and at times I got a little lost. I think if I were to read this book again I would grasp the intricacies more.

Bought this series because the cover was so pretty and ever since then it’s been on my shelves for so long but I’ve finally picked it up and it was surprisingly a good read. The plot was so different and interesting and I can’t wait to read the next one to see what happens next!

I absolutely DEVOURED this. This was so well written; the world-building was so well done and interesting that I was hooked from the jump. It was cool reading about Tarisai's childhood from a child to a teenager, and being able to follow her story and she matured and came into her own and learned what it meant to be her own person vs a pawn in her mother's game. I fell in love with Dayo, Sanjeet, Kirah and every single member of the council; it's such a beautiful story of found family and unconditional love. There were several time throughout the book that I genuinely sqeauled out loud, and had to hold back tears. One of the best and MOST diverse YA fantasy books I've read in a long time; I'm only disappointed I didn't pick it up sooner.
