"Auxier" means "genius originality" in North Dakotan Pittsburghese.
My son and I finished reading the second Peter Nimble book, Sophie Quire and the Last Storyguard by Jonathan Auxier this morning. While this book brought the return of the Peter Nimble character, this book's star was really Sophie Quire. I had criticized the first book for not having a strong female character until well into the book, well this second book more than made up for any lack of female strength in the first book. Sophie and her father own a book shop and they are just trying to get by as Inquisitor Prigg is rounding up all of the nonsense aka stories which he plans on burning in a giant pyre. Sophie with the help of Peter Nimble and Sir Tode must track down four magical books and do her best to stop Prigg from ridding the world of it's magic contained in books. There were more quirky and delightful characters in this book, including the tigress, Akrasia. Sophie was so smart and I loved her love of books. The action was great and the message was even better. My son and I both loved it and agreed it was even better than the first. Auxier sent Peter and Sophie out on a new mission right at the end of the book, so I have high hopes for an equally great third book.
Diversity and inclusion in a FANTASTICALLY WRITTEN BOOK. Auxier has done it again and it's so good. So very very good! Peter and Sophie and of course Sir Tode will run the world and your hearts.
Auxier developed his series and improved upon the original. I'm glad I continued with the series, reading about Sophie was well worth it. I'd also like to add that Sophie Quire is undoubtedly a child of color - she is described as having very dark skin and hair. Love it! There is a dearth of middle grade fantasy with ethnic protagonists, so I will definitely be sharing this with children in the future.
4.5 stars- I enjoyed this one more than Peter Nimble #1
This book should be read by every reader, every book lover, every person. A master story told by a master storyteller.
Every book lover should read this epic adventure--all about saving books!!!
A delightful and well written fantasy novel. I haven't read book one in this series, but found that book two stands on its own.
Sophie Quire is the last Storyguard. This is the tale of her adventures through a strange and magical world, with an amazing cast of magical characters. Peter Nimble who has a sword for a hand, and his sidekick Sir Tode who is an enchanted combination of horse, cat and knight, and many others.

We loved this book. We read it together as a family read aloud, and loved every bit of it.
If at all possible, start by reading Peter Nimble and His Fantastic Eyes.
