Very cute ❤

I hope more people will write books like this, and more kids will read them. The story itself was a bit unbelievable, but normalizing the LGBTQ experience is so important for middle grade readers.

A našla tu pravou!
Anotace mi sedla do noty a kniha měla obecně dobré hodnocení, tak jsem se do toho pustila. A kniha splnila veškerá má očekávání.
(A nikdo neumírá!)
Bylo to pěkně napsaný, v lehkém tónu, žádná mega dramata. Prostě ideální feel-good kniha na zlepšení nálady. Věřím, že v budoucnu bude i re-reading.
Oba palce nahoru!

SUPER adorable. Queer middle grade children realising their place in the world through the school play is starting to become a bit of a trope, but I have loved all three of the books I have read this year with that theme, so I'm not complaining!

This was very sweet and super full of Shakespeare which I realise means it might not be for everyone, but I quite enjoyed it :)

This was very, very cute

THIS WAS SO CUTE!!!!!!!!!

Do you remember what it feels like to develop a crush without realizing it a crush?? And then when your friend points it out to you because it's so obvious, you finally recognize it as a crush and all your bubbly feelings are magnified by the anxiety of anyone finding out??? And it's clear that they like you, but you don't know if they like like you, and you don't want to say anything that might ruin everything because you're getting to spend so much time with them because you're in play together and it's just the best time of your life???? IF NOT THAT'S OK because this book will make you feel all those feels. I can't believe a series of symbols printed on dead trees could do this, but I felt like I had a crush. This story is magical.

I enjoyed this overall. A middle school girl in a real life version of Romeo and Juliet where she falls out of love (her original guy crush) and falls in love with a girl, but she still says she could fall in love with a guy again in the future. Also the aspect of all the play things going on was nice details and drama outside of Mattie coming to terms with who she is.

The few things I had issues with though were a) even though the author has a daughter who has come out to her the actual terminology of bisexual was never used. I think especially in these middle grade novels using those terms helps to take away the stigma of it all. B) you can definitely tell it was written by someone who wasn’t on the LGBT+ spectrum as there were just certain parts of the book that were phrased in a way that made it clear that the author is most likely straight. C) the character making Mattie not feeling ready to come out to her yet all about her instead of Mattie coming out is just a thing I hate in general. I’m very lucky in that most of my coming outs have been EXTREMELY positive but this one weirds me out every time it happens and in a middle grade situation it just felt out of place to me. D) last but not least, I would have liked to see Mattie come out to one of her parents. She did come out to a family member, but coming out to a parent (in my own situation/opinion was the thing that was so much harder) so I would have loved to see someone who had been part of a coming out like that write about that.

Besides these things, I really did like the book. I was cute and really made me feel things I felt back in middle school although Mattie got to kiss her crush while I didn’t lol. Definitely a book I would have loved to read at the age this is aimed for because maybe I wouldn’t have waited until I was 20 to come out

This book was so amazing, especially for the age group it's directed at. I appreciate an LGBT+ story that doesn't involve violence or extreme rejection for the characters. That seems far too rare, especially among YA literature. Parts of it seemed a little unrealistic, but that mostly had to do with the structuring of their play rehearsals and their English curriculum. The plot and characters mostly worked for me. Some of the predictability and obvious mirroring I can excuse for the target audience.

Really sweet story and the author makes Romeo and Juliet very accessible.
