I didn’t find Sadie and Sam particularly likable, but I completely understood their motivations and their choices were believable.
This was a really ambitious book, and I think Zevin executed it really well. You can tell she put in a lot of time researching to make it realistic. It’s clearly a love letter to gaming, and I really appreciated the style of the different sections. I think it added a lot to the narrative. This is definitely a book that I will enjoy even more on a future read, though having a physical copy would make it easier to flip back to remind myself of different sections.

Not a true adult/minor relationship, but the power dynamic was definitely like one. The ableism is more internalized.hayleyfitz's review against another edition

The content warnings that I provided are not in the book in vain, they are necessary and responsibly handled. The author took a lot of time to appropriately write about difficult topics, and how they impact a friendship over decades.krisroll's review against another edition

I really wish we had some different content warnings - this book contains homophobic slurs, BDSM as a tool of abuse, and a student/professor relationship where both parties are adults.miles's review against another edition

Only adding the 'toxic friendship' tag because Sam and Sadie hurt each other a lot, mostly because of miscommunication and misconstruing the other's intentions, but they love each other a lot and are each other's most important person in the world so it's complicated, really.diazaa's review against another edition

Pros:
-just good storytelling. I like the narrative structure of jumping across time, the omniscient narration is used to great effect
-the device of video games is also very clever. It allows for layered storytelling. It allows for nostalgic pop culture references
-there are beautiful brushes with human nature. Lots of extremely quotable bits. I cried a lot
Cons:
-sometimes it dips past richness and into cliche. It’s over-dramatic in an unnecessary way at times. The writing sometimes seems a bit too self-aware and it takes me out of the story
-a lot of CW content. More than was needed for the story in my opinion
