The first two chapters were a bit rough, and I didn’t love the style of the language, but I kept reading because I was intrigued. And then I read the third chapter and was hooked. By the end, I was in love.

I didn’t find Sadie and Sam particularly likable, but I completely understood their motivations and their choices were believable.

This was a really ambitious book, and I think Zevin executed it really well. You can tell she put in a lot of time researching to make it realistic. It’s clearly a love letter to gaming, and I really appreciated the style of the different sections. I think it added a lot to the narrative. This is definitely a book that I will enjoy even more on a future read, though having a physical copy would make it easier to flip back to remind myself of different sections.

This is the best book I have read in a long time. My first 5 star read of 2023. I definitely think that this book has changed my outlook on life for the better.

I struggled a lot with this one. I bounced off the first chapter, told myself I didn't wait 4 months on a library hold to immediately DNF it, and made myself read the whole thing. To be perfectly honest, what kept me going was that this is the closest to a queerplatonic relationship I have seen in fiction, and I am a starved aro ace who is willing to eat any crumbs I can find. It wasn't until around the 70% mark that I was hooked. I strongly disliked our two main characters though.

God this book is fucking phenomenal. Very life-affirming, very emotional, very devastating, very beautiful. It ripped out my heart and broke me and then put me back together. I love it.

This book is almost perfect. It’s “unputdownable” and it’s also really good. The major flaw, I think, is that the characters’ flaws did not feel like they were reflective of humanity, they felt like plot devices. It was just almost, but not quite, real. Since we’re talking about video games, it was maybe a bit uncanny valley, but with my heart instead of my brain. But I LOVE a platonic love story, and this book was full of platonic, and familial, love. I will read it again. I will buy a physical copy so I can write notes all in the margins.
Pros:
-just good storytelling. I like the narrative structure of jumping across time, the omniscient narration is used to great effect
-the device of video games is also very clever. It allows for layered storytelling. It allows for nostalgic pop culture references
-there are beautiful brushes with human nature. Lots of extremely quotable bits. I cried a lot
Cons:
-sometimes it dips past richness and into cliche. It’s over-dramatic in an unnecessary way at times. The writing sometimes seems a bit too self-aware and it takes me out of the story
-a lot of CW content. More than was needed for the story in my opinion

This is a really beautiful story about how love and soulmates are not always romantic. Two friends can be platonic soulmates.
