Tensions are high and war is on the horizon as Violet and her monsters jump through Idun’s hoops and try to figure out a way to beat her once and for all.

In the meantime, the truth of Violet’s monster remains a secret until she is finally pushed far enough and reacts, putting an end to the war and Idun’s power in a single swoop.

Now she can finally have ever happily ever after, that is if her monsters can get along with each other.

REVIEW:

So this is the final book in the series and also the longest. A lot happens, but at the same time not enough to justify such a long book (and long series overall).

The story is interesting and the characters are likable. But it’s all just too long. Looking back on everything that happened I can say, with confidence, that this series easily could’ve been 3-4 NORMAL sized books. Long books aren’t bad, if they have a meaty plot to back it up. But this series took a very thin plot and stretched it so far that the majority of the series is just waiting for the good stuff to actually happen.

And Idun as a villain was so underwhelming. Even before Violet (so easily) takes her out, she just comes across as jealous and petty. I didn’t really understand why everyone was so scared of her when it seemed like several alphas (or four *ahem*) could’ve teamed up to easily defeat her. When Violet and her monster finally take her out it’s fun and satisfying. But also disappointing that it was so easy.

This RH is also not my favorite in general. There is not nearly enough steam and romance. The romance takes a back seat to setting up the plot (which drags on). And even in the end, the guys are still always bickering and fighting. I enjoyed their banter for a time, but I also hoped to see them grow to be a more unified team. But they still fight and have a lot of jealousy among each other right up until the end of the book.

Then there’s the big reveal about what Violet’s monster was. And while it was cool in some ways, it was also a little disappointing. I thought she’d be something bigger. I actually thought for a little while that she might be the mythical god, The Destroyer. Because she’s good at destroying things (recipes, sewing, the guys’ curses, reputations, etc). I thought it would fit well. But she ends up being Hyde (like Jekyll and Hyde) and that was kind of lame. How strong she is with all of her “ghostly” backup is neat, but the core reveal was kind of disappointing.

So the book (and series) was a roller coaster. The first two books were great, but the pacing really started to go downhill after that. This book was a bit of a drag, until we finally found out the secret of Violet’s monster — at around 70%, or 400 pages into the book. After that the book got good, but that’s a long time to finally pick up the pace!

I also was sad about Shera leaving and going with Emily. This seemed like a step backwards for her. :(

Overall I liked the plot of the book/series, but the execution could’ve been better. It was way too slow paced. And I really would’ve loved more steam and romance along the way. It’s an okay series. I’m not sure if I’d recommend it. Maybe for those who like books with some humor and are slower paced. I’d recommend Kristy’s Four Psychos series over this though.

P.S. The book covers for this series seriously need updating. They are so ugly and terrible. Blech.

Would have given 5 stars but some editing stuff takes one off. This was my favorite of the series though- so funny, also pretty dark, with medium spice.

Epilogue was disappointing but otherwise it was a good end

What a great ending to a great series. Sure there a ton of confusing elements and problematic things, but the confusing things were mostly cleared up as I re-read the first five right before reading this one. Violet is a super strong main character and just awesome.

I will say I'm not a fan of the very last bit and how they treat her-- it felt weird and not right for them, so ignoring that scene, I enjoyed everything else and will probably re-read this series again in the future.

Kristy Cunning is one of my top 5 RH writers.

Edward the ghost appears next, and I lunge for him, only to hear his laughter echoing in his wake, as he disappears and reappears next to me.
“The wolves don’t need you. But Damien does. Hurry, Van Helsing. The party’s getting too crowded there. You’re missing all the fun,” the cheeky fucker says in what has to be the happiest tone I’ve heard him use.
He disappears after that, leaving me to sink into the muddied earth beneath me, while my mind stumbles all over itself.
“What the fucking hell is going on?!” I shout toward the sky.
“A lot,” comes a rasp voice that gives an answer I wasn’t expecting.

After spending the vast majority of my life lonely my time being annoyef with this series, I came to this town book to find answers about my mother everything and everyone, and instead, stumbled upon a secret society full of monsters more secrets and maddening situations I never knew existed outside of dark tales.

Now I've built a sanctuary, gotten in the middle of an ages-old feud between various monster factions read all 6 books in the series, and somehow ended up with an ancient, queen-like tyrant targeting me writting full blown reviews that were really fantastical tales for 5 of them when the books annoyed the ever loving fluff out of me as much as they made me enjoy them, because my life sucks sometimes.

I don't know how these things keep happening to me. They just do.

Like I said, my life sucks sometimes.

That ⤴ would be the blurb for this review, if I ever wrote one. Which I kind of did. Huh.

I know, I know, you (might?) have been expecting a fantastical tale like the ones I wrote for the other 5 books, but in all honesty I got no energy for one right now.

With that said let me lay it out for you:

Did I enjoy this book? Yes

Did I enjoy the series as a whole? Yes

Did this book annoy me? Yes

Did this series annoy me? Hell Yes

The writing and structure of this book was the same as the previous ones: Shitty, capital S. The story did make up for it - to an extent. We got all the answers. We also got whiplash. So there's that.

Problems:

1) Pace: This was rushed. The whole fucking series was all over the fucking place. This could have easily been a four book series if there was any pacing at any given time. So this book was running like its ass was on fire while the rest were pretending to be turtles. Nope.

2) The Villain: WHAT VILLAIN?!?! We had 4 books were the villain was build up to unheard of proportions and in the end we saw nothing to even suggest she was worth a damn. Naturally this took away from the whole story. If you're gonna tell us someone is a villain the least you can do is show us something to back that claim up!

In the end, I am glad I read this, no matter the rage and hair pulling it induced.

I am Maraya and I survived this series.

This series really made me crave oranges. Also SO MUCH happens in this book, my goodness.

I honestly completely forgot about Anna having told Violet who she really was until about halfway into this book. And then that whole thing got a little muddled with the Hyde and Jack thing. I do love me a powered tf up heroine though.
And the fact that she had already come to terms with it and made peace AND could control it?????? A literal slay. And the display case!!!! Emily was also a pleasant surprise.

The real fantasy aspect of this is that Violet gets off from just penetration, no foreplay, every time.

This series is just such a delight. One of my favorites to go back to again and again.
