This book ended up being a little too fluffy for me: flat characters, leaning heavily on gore, and uncritical "commentary" about pop culture that wasn't too profound; the book mostly just shit on influencer culture and the people who participate in it without meaningfully investigating it. The queer relationship was also pretty flat and unexamined.

Because I’m a happy wee paranormal sad sack, I knew exactly what this story would be about simply from the title alone and that’s why I wanted to read it!! And it did not disappoint. Think The Bachelor meets The Missing 411 conspiracies. What a combo! Reading this on the back of two duds was great timing as it was funny and satirical and just an all round good time of a book! I had to giggle at the alternative social media platforms - ‘glamstapix’ and ‘click clack’. Oh and mixed media features you say? Thumbs up from me! This is a really easy read and a great wee yarn about the toxicity of reality TV for all involved (crew, contestant AND viewers) and that good things happen when gals look out for each other! Also shout out for some queer rep in there too.

I really enjoyed this book. The whole premise, the writing (even if Allen once said “esophagus” when she meant “trachea”), the characters. Really fun in a kind of wicked way. The behind-the-scenes scheming of the show was absolutely delicious. This book would’ve been a 5 for me except for the end. I just couldn’t understand why the women were so murderous? Why they kept sending people up there to be killed, even with so much attention from the outside? It just doesn’t make a lot of logical sense. If the contestants could find Patricia’s graveyard of bones so easily, why couldn’t the police? I also would’ve chosen a different voice actor for Lila Mae/May; every other actor’s voice really nailed it but that voice was too husky. It did not contribute to my rating, however.
Graphic: Gun violence and Violence
Moderate: Homophobia
