I found this to be a completely different reading experience to the original series and to the first prequel, not necessarily in a bad way, but in a notable way.

I suppose because I knew the ending going in, including
what happens to Haymitch's family, since he is entirely alone by the original series
that most of the actual tension was sucked out of the story, for me. But that does not mean that it wasn't enjoyable. This was an extremely easy read, chapters were flying by and by the time I was in the last quarter I couldn't put it down, I had to finish it.

If I had to name an emotion to summarise the experience of reading it, it'd be that I found the whole thing very interesting. I was fascinated to see some of our big name characters from the original series 25 years younger. I loved in particular the seeding of
Effie being not the worst person in the capitol
among others.

The best thing about this book, in my opinion,
was watching the transition from Haymitch pre-victor into Victor Haymitch. I think this was written incredibly, his haze and drunkenness and refusal to let anyone close to him was so smoothly written that I barely noticed the transition and yet by the end I could tell he felt so much closer to the Haymitch we knew from the trilogy. Incredible writing.

If you're a hunger games fan, this is an obvious recommendation. Don't worry about it spoiling the original series or anything like that. This is a slam dunk of a prequel. Informative of characters we know and love from the originals and illustrative of how far back some of the plots really go.

Back to Panem! I took my time reading this one. The writing style was easy to digest. The story kept drawing me in and making me think about it even when I wasn't reading. It was a different experience since I already had a good idea of what was going to happen. I didn't connect to the characters as much as I did in the original trilogy, probably for that reason as well.
I was also really confused by the reappearance of certain characters in a different context. It made me rethink my previous knowledge of them in a way trying to fit the pieces together for continuity. And maybe I'm remembering things wrong but it wasn't really seamless. I also wonder if the author was influenced by the portrayal of the characters in the movies.

I absolutely loved this book. The Hunger Games has been my favorite series since I first read it in middle school. Last year, I reread the entire series- including TBOSAS- and fell in love with it all over again. I was SO excited for the release of this book, and it did not disappoint! Even though I knew the general idea of what would happen from previous books, I couldn't have predicted how it actually went down. And yes, I still cried at the end.

*SPOILERS BELOW*

The only reason I don't give this book five stars is because of the recurring characters from other books, and how forced it felt. What are the chances that Haymitch is best friends with Katniss's dad, saves Peeta's dad, has Wiress and Mags as his mentors, Effie as his stylist, and Beetee and Plutarch behind the scenes helping him break the arena? It just felt so forced. I could understand a few of these connections- and I loved the plotline with Beetee and Ampert- but it was just overdone, and I felt myself growing annoyed every time another character came back.

This book is devastating in the best possible way. I already had some empathy for Haymitch, and have even more now.

There is one major thing that everyone reading this review needs to know before going any further and that is: This book was not written for me. I'm not the target audience for this book and I'm aware of that. I'm beyond the age demographic for it and I am also not someone who holds any nostalgia for the Hunter Games series in their written form. That plays a big role into why this book didn't vibe with me the same way it touched so many other people.

Overall, I think this was a fine addition to the series. It answers a question that I never really considered or was curious before as a casual enjoyer of the IP, which is: How and when did the Victors rebelling start (at like in practice rather than just in theory)? Because looking back now, I know that there's no way the Quarter Quell tributes would've been able to nail bludgeoning the arena during their first go. It's due to this question being answered that I wasn't really bothered by certain characters appearing and helping out. It made a lot of sense. There's only one instance of a character showing up that really felt unnecessary.

My biggest non-spoilery gripe about this book is how quickly everything happens. The moments of what should be full of emotional impact left me feeling like I had whiplash because of how fast they came and went, with no real time to digest what had happened. Which leads me to my biggest disappointment in the book, the thing ultimately took my rating down lower than I originally thought it would be...

I know that there are people out there saying that this book is about propaganda, not the games themselves, and I don't disagree with that entirely but I do think that the propaganda of Haymitch's behavior in the games, the way that the capitol edited the games to make it seem like he was a selfish asshole the whole time who abandoned his fellow District 12 tributes, as well as the Newcomers alliance, didn't have enough impact on the story. When the games were said and done, and how oh so quickly they were over, I figured that the propaganda portion of the story would be bigger. That there would be something more to the capitol's manipulation of the games that would impact Haymitch's return home or the victory tour. But instead, he returned home and no one was angry. No one was upset. Like yes, these people are at the sharp end of the Capitol's attention. They know the Capitol is bad. But seeing someone you love dying in the games after they were sent away with someone who holds affection for them? That doesn't affect how you treat someone at all, even if you know logically that what you saw might not be the truth?

This is Lenore Dove's work. Her sign. Her message to me now. Her reminder that I must prevent another sunrise on the reaping. And it says, "You promised me." With that, she condemns me to life.

Oh my fucking goodness I loved this book SO MUCHHHH. And I swear on my life, if "Golden Brown" by The Stranglers doesn't play in the end credits for the movie I'm lowkey gonna crash out.
