I wish there were half stars. I’d give this 2 and a half. It wasn’t a bad read it just wasn’t written in a way that drew me in and feeling emotionally connected. I could tell a lot of this was fiction and it made me wonder if there was much in the book that was actually true. It seemed like the author was trying to keep from expounding on the bad conditions that it didn’t seem to do justice to what Cilka went through. From other things I’ve read about the gulags they were horrific and they seemed glossed over in this book.

Another heartbreaking but absolutely wonderfully written story by Heather Morris. I literally couldn't put it down!
From the author who wrote, "The Tattooist of Auschwitz", Heather Morris continues from the stories shared in her first book about Cilka Klein and wraps them into entire other story. This book is beautifully written and shows so much humiliation. Cilka's character is brave, kind, sympathetic, and warms your soul. 4.5/5

Excellent story based on a real person. Writing is just a bit choppy.

Yet another brilliant piece of historical fiction from Heather Morris.
Having just finished reading more complex literary works, this book felt a little plain in its style to begin with, but the story itself was compelling and eye opening to the horrors that occurred after WW2 finished.
If you’ve read others by Heather Morris, and this book is appealing, I’d also suggest reading ‘The Long Walk’ by Slavomir Rawicz, ‘Three Sisters’ by Heather M, and ‘The Nine’ by Gwen Strauss.

A very powerful and moving read.
