An unbelievably original graphic novel. On the surface a pirate adventure story, but with so much more to it, and so many unexpected twists and turns. It's classed as juvenile but it definitely appeals to all ages.
A fun adventure full of pirates and monsters. These weren't my fantasies growing up so it never really captured my passion, but I think the right reader would be really moved by it.
One of the 5th graders in my book club has started giving me reading assignments to do before each meeting. This past month, I had to (finally) read The Unsinkable Walker Bean by Aaron Renier. This book was always on my "to read" list, but somehow just kept ending up getting lost in the mix. I'm so glad I finally read it (after all, I couldn't go the the book club meeting and tell this kid that I still haven't read it)! Sea creatures, mythology, adventure! With the great mystery story line and at times creepy artwork, what is there not to like? I only hope that a second one is on it's way someday. Now, off to read my next "book club assignment".
Whimsical. Very nice illustrations that take you to the settings. I'm not huge on the character designs, but there's nothing negative I have to say. The environments, creatures, and visual storytelling are all strong. Entertaining throughout. The story is self-contained, and though I know there's a second installment, I feel satisfied having read this and don't really feel a need to seek out the second (though if I came across it, I'd give it a shot.) Very solid--storytelling, art, compulsivity to keep reading are all there.
Nothing moved me to rate this a five, but I will keep my copy and read again in the future. Follow the nautical journeys of a headstrong kid on his own as he meets friends and frenemies on the way. The story is a little bit lofty but handled well. The protagonist's backstory is hinted at but never fully explained. Touching, nostalgic, dreamy. A little bit trite, but comforting. Recommended.

Oops. I read this last year sometime and never added it to Goodreads, so I'll just guess.
The premise was ambitious and intriguing but the execution was a little disappointing. The artwork is fine, despite a very rough, wiggly kind of style. The plot is very long and convoluted and sometimes hard to follow.
If you like pirate stories and treasure map quest kind of stories... give it a try.

complex, fresh, compelling, and with great characters. kinda has "Treasure Island" vibes, but a tad more sinister.
bonus points for having a map

This graphic novel is an example of why I have difficulty reading this format. I have a hard time blending the pictorial with the words, so I had trouble understanding some of the details of the story (like Gen's back story and the friction with Walker's father). With that acknowledgement of my bias, I did enjoy the story. An adventure on the high seas, with some magical trickery and scientific geekery, the adventure was intriguing and the illustrations were beautiful.

Really fun graphic novel. Fun story. Feels almost like Scooby Do with it's fun. The characters are fun, but a little one note.
