They married so he could gain an inheritance, then comes a twist no one saw coming. Eva's heroines are criminals. I guess you could say the good kind of criminals? They are definitely not your usual society debutantes. Yay! This one was a very enjoyable read and we get to see past couples which was delightful.

I'm not one for deceit usually but they way the story is played out it works for the couple. I'm highly anticipating the next one!

I received an advance copy from Edelweiss in exchange for an honest review.

Yaay, new Eva Leigh! As usual, this has Leigh's intelligent, complicated hero and heroine, a well-researched plot, and feels like it should be longer.

Kit is a penniless lord who needs a wife ASAP in order to gain a fortune, and Tamsyn is a penniless lady who needs a wealthy husband ASAP in order to save her home village. When they find each other, each thinks the other will solve their problems. But when Kit's inheritance comes with a surprise requirement, suddenly, Tamsyn is a very wealthy woman with a very put out husband. How can Kit make his dream a reality if Tamsyn wants that same money for her village?

I really, really liked the stories of the two main characters. I love that Kit's goal is a pleasure garden, and that Tamsyn's running a smuggling operation. When I finished this, I wanted to dig up everything I could find about pleasure gardens, and that's after dozens of books with Vauxhall as a plot point. Kit's reasoning for the garden felt like something he'd latched onto and hadn't reexamined, like many of us do with long-held ideas, as did Tamsyn's goal. I liked that their arcs required them to take a hard look at what they actually wanted vs what they thought they wanted, something that definitely feels like a step in adulthood.

Tamsyn needs a husband so that she can by her mouldy rotten estate and keep on smuggling. I get it, she wants to help the villagers. But if she gets caught then they will suffer, it would sure be better if they came up with a plan that made them all work and not just her smuggling and giving them money.

Kit needs a wife to inherit money, but he is picky, and hey, I mean he has got a whole month! But I get it, who wouldn't be picky. This is forever.

London underground, ehhh, not really, more Cornwall underground in this. London ton before we hit the seaside.

But, I never grew to like her. I felt like she was playing him until the end. He was besotted the poor fool, but she, nope, did not see an ounce of love there even though we are told at the end.
I also got mad at her because he was obviously hurting cos of the war and she was all forget it.
There is also a Smex club which frankly was just weird.

So no, I fear this one only gets an ok and that almost never happen with his rom. But she was just so unlikable.

Kit needs to be married within a month in order to inherit a fortune left to him by an old war buddy. Tamsyn is in town trying to move her smuggled goods since her fence deserted her, but she isn't having any luck, so now she must find a rich, disinterested husband. What luck that these to meet and agree to a marriage of convenience.
After they are married she finds out how much he hates law breakers and his friend put his wife in charge of the fortune he inherited, ruining his plans as well. These 2 spend the whole book sneaking and seducing and it's a good deal of fun to read, though she got a bit repetitive with her constant I love him but I have to lie to him routine, thankfully all secrets are revealed before it got to be to much and then you just get all the angsty what are they gonna do entertainment.
Can't wait to read more by this author.

I’m this second installment, the female is a smuggler and the male character is a newly minted earl with not money to back up the title. He also has no financial acumen and spends money and wracks up debt like it won’t ever come back to bite him. She marries him to have a neglectful husband so she can continue smuggling to save her people from starvation.

I like marriage of convenience plots more than anything, and this one was okay. Both characters have moments of emotional growth. But it was just okay.
