Now this is a good Star Wars book. Darth Vader continues his search for Luke Skywalker, Dr. Aphra pulls off a heist, and they both must evade an Imperial investigator that is closing in on them. It showcases the calculating side of Darth Vader to great effect. I'd heard a lot of good things about Dr. Aphra, but I wasn't convinced until I read this volume. She is more than capable of matching Darth Vader without feeling contrived.

The supporting characters introduced in volume one that I wasn't fond of, specifically the murder droids and the potential replacements for Vader, are used really well here. The droids are a lot more fun to read and felt less like one note characters. Vader's rivals serve more of a purpose without cluttering up the story. They were more believable because they had something to do aside from vying for the Emperor's attention.

And the art is great. The characters are portrayed well and the different locations look wonderful. This book pulls together a lot of elements to make a great story. I want more.

I'm enjoying that this series seems to be as much about Doctor Aphra as it is about Vader (I'd expected her to simply be introduced here, and am pleased she's so prevalent in the tale).

Vader is going down a slippery slope with all his double dealings. He's bound to paint himself into a corner sooner or later. I get the sense that it's going to be an interesting ride.

It's a fun story. It's all about Vader. He finds out here that Padme gave birth before she died. And he finds out Luke is his son. And so we see him scheming to find Luke, but without Palpatine finding out. When you're a sith, lies and deceit are the way, even among sith. Really cool art, too.

Note for reader - I have not read the trade paperback but have read the individual comics instead.

To be honest this arc doesn't really work for me as well as the first arc. The story is a bit 'keystone cops' as Vader is staying one step ahead of the Emperor who has assigned a brilliant investigator to Vader to find out who stole lots of credits intended for the Empire. Of course Vader knows entirely who is responsible for the theft...

The story is fun and I find myself rooting for Vader and Aphra but it's only okay and doesn't seem to fit the character somewhat.

What is powerful is just how easy the Emperor feels he can discard his 'star' pupil, it really does show how twisted and malevolent the relationship is. That said, Palpatine's 'Plan B' just seems exceptionally lame and I just wasn't feeling it.

Fun continuation of the story. The fun is in the side characters.

I liked it almost as much as the first volume. I think, more than anything, I am rating this based on an emotional response - I like Dr. Aphra and Vader's relationship, I like the juxtaposition of the flashbacks, I like how Vader's desperately trying to uncover the secret behind Padme's death. It's also an interesting time for Darth Vader's character because he's not the Vader we saw in A New Hope anymore, but he is not yet the Vader we see in Return of the Jedi either. He's in this grey in between, and I think that's interesting to see.
