Shortly after I started reading this book, I started thinking - "why am I doing this to myself." it hit too close to home, for personal reasons.
going into it I thought it was a light book about an angel falling from the sky, but what I got was a beautifully written story about grieve and how we sometimes knowingly or unknowingly cling to it, simply because we don't know how to move on.
T.J Klune has a way of taking very funny looking, bizarre prompts and writing about them in a way that hurts and that makes you think about a lot of things.
book is for sure not for everyone, but I had a good time. laughed, cried (more one than the other).
maybe it was because I could relate to the main character, been through the same journey and my 5Star rating is a bit biased, but I still think it's a good book.

I admit, I only skimmed the last third.
The cover and title seemed so beautiful and drew me to the book, but it turned into a good example of "don't judge a book by its cover".
In the end, I felt it was too long, boring and repetitive. I didn't like the writing style at all, it read like an elevated fanfic.
The characters were flat and one-dimensional.
All the religious gibberish didn't help.
It was probably a bad choice for a first read from this author, considering he's quite beloved by readers.
I'll read more from the author in hopes I like his other works better.

i started reading this because everything tj does is wonderful and the summary is literally that of a supernatural case fic so like, i couldn’t NOT read it.
it’s WONDERFUL. it hurts and it made me cry once or twice, but the story is important and beautiful and absolutely what i wish supernatural had the balls to do.
i would die for cal and benji, zero questions asked.

A book that is full of heartache, grief, anger, courage and love. My one quibble with this book may well be what sells it to someone else: it was quite religious, and that just rubs me the wrong way.
I have really enjoyed Klunes other books so I had high hopes for this one. Unfortunately it in no way lived up to them. There were a few redeeming moments but overall they weren’t enough to save it for me.
By the end I was skimming through whole sections because of how clunky and overdone the prose was. Scenes felt thrown together haphazardly too. Should also note that a lot of it felt very preachy.
The book is only 390 pages but somehow felt so so much longer - as in it dragged on. Despite how long and prosey the book itself felt, the characters for the most part felt a little bland and underdone. I didn’t feel very invested in regards to what happened to them.
I also had a real issue with the repeated use of transphobic language. Despite the context (usually used by characters who were telling the main character they didn’t care if he gay) I didn’t think it was necessary at all.

Even if this story was a bit confusing at time its was still beautiful. It still left me with such a wonderful warm feeling inside. I just love the flow of TJs writing and this is one of his most beautiful. Although I was a bit overwhelmed by the story at times. A lot is happening in this book. It is a romance with an angel but also a murder mystery/crime story with a lot of shooting and then at the end it gets super religious which may have had me scratching my head a bit. But still a stunning story and I cried a lot.
