Oh my... Maybe it's because I've been watching Supernatural, a lot, but this one creeped me out. The illustrations are pretty good and I like the feeling they give to the story.
I kept hearing about this one, so maybe the hype was too much. I liked it, but I didn't love it.
I loved this book! It was the perfect combination of creepy and mystical. It was a very hard book to put down, with twists and turns that have you on the edge of your seat!

"'There's people who do things and people who never do--who say they will someday, but they just don't. I want to go on a quest. …" Poppy (96)
"If they [ghosts] were real, then maybe the world was big enough to have magic in it. And if there was magic--even bad magic, and Zach knew it was more likely that there was bad magic than any good kind--then maybe not everyone had to have a story like his father's, a story like the kind all th adults he knew told, one about giving up and growing bitter." (117)
"'I thought that we could do this thing, and when it was over we'd have something that no one else had--an experience that would keep us together. I can see you changing.'" (199)
"He didn't want to forget, and he wanted everyone to stop talking like it was inevitable, like it would happen whether he wanted it to or not." (199)
"'I hate that everyone calls it growing up, but it seems like dying. It feels like each of you is being possessed and I'm next.'" Poppy (200)
"'But I've been thinking that protecting somebody by hurting them before someone else gets the chance isn't the kind of protecting that anybody wants." Zach's dad (207)
"Maybe all stories were true ones." (240)

i think my favourite part was that there was room for it to be truly scary. there was a very clear beginning to that, and a backstory that could've made the whole story so much more of a horror, but holly only alluded to that. i think it was a perfect fit for her writing style, and her reader's imaginations
I'm not much for middle grade fiction, and I'm especially not fond of current middle grade fiction. It feels like authors are trying their hardest to push the boundaries of how much inappropriate content can and cannot be published for children.
Doll Bones was a breath of fresh air. It never tried to be anything age inappropriate. The characters are fleshed out to perfection, and their back stories are at times heartbreaking. The book as a whole was intelligent without being unnecessarily wordy or too complicated for a child to read. And yet it had a magic within it that kept me reading long into the night. The children all have an unmistakable bond of friendship that will bring you back to your own days as a child and fill you with joy.
And heads up for all of you that like to read at night. This book is at times creepy beyond belief. I have a terrible fear of porcelain dolls, and this book is about a possessed one.
Even if you don't like middle grade fiction, I highly suggest you give this one a shot!

Interesting, but not nearly as creepy as I was led to believe it was.
